Need some good scholarships/ How can I get more financial aid?

Do any of you know of any good scholarships? How can I get more financial aid for a college? Any ideas? Want to go to University of Illinois at Chicago but they only gave me 10k which doesn’t cover the mandatory fees of 4k. What should I do? Thanks

Could you please clarify? You got $10,000 in aid…but you say that doesn’t cover $4000 in fees? Are you saying you are $4000 short for the year…for the term or what?

Did you take the Direct Loan of $5500 for the year? If you completed the FAFSA you can do this…and it will cover $4000…if the shortfall is for the year.

School starts very soon. It’s a little late to be looking for money for this term.

Tuition is 10k but the school requires 4k for their mandatory fees and I only got 10k. What would be the best thing to do If I really wanted to go to this school?

Did you take the $5500 Direct Loan already? Did you complete the FAFSA?

Surely you knew about this shortfall before…now. Right? Like i said…classes start soon…it’s a little late to look for scholarships for THIS academic year.

Did you work this summer? Any savings? Can your parents help out?

I don’t want to take out loans. Yes I did complete FAFSA but wouldn’t making some changes to my fafsa affect my financial aid?

As long as your FAFSA was completed accurately the first time, you don’t need to make any changes if you decide to take the loans now.

What is the best thing I can try If I really wanted to go to this college?

Take the guaranteed federal loan.

@Edwin99

You can take out only $4000 in Direct Loans. You don’t have to take out $5500.

If all you need for this term is $2000, then take that amount, and find yourself a part time job to earn money for next term $2000. You can take the loan if you need it if you have a shortfall after your job earnings.

All you need to do is contact your financial aid office and tell them you want this loan. You will have to complete entrance counseling, and a master promissory note.

Can I take out a loan and If I get more aid during the year, be able to cancel the loan?

You can repay any amount of the loan you have taken. And you don’t need to take additional loans if you don’t need them.

But really good luck finding scholarships…at this late date.

Where can I find some scholarships?

Take out the student loan, get a part-time job, and enjoy the opportunity to get an education for $4000 a year! Or is that per semester? It seems like such a good deal either way!

My daughter worked enough this summer to kick in the $2000 unsubsidized part of the Federal loan in her own cash instead, so she will just be taking out the part with no interest until she graduates ($3500). She wants to get a 10-hour job during the school year so she can hopefully do the same thing each year, and have a head start on paying back her loans when she graduates. She hustles jobs like crazy in the summer: babysitting and dog walking on top of weeknight and weekend jobs. Still lots of time for fun!

Very few people are given a 100% free ride to college!

Are you an 18 year old entering freshman?

Why weren’t you looking for additional money in say…February, or March or even May?

What additional money? From where?

You will not get any more scholarships. You cannot redo the FAFSA and lie (you will be caught and expelled). Take out the loans.

I don’t want to take out loans

You’re really late if you need the money for the Fall 2018 term. Your only option is the loan. You could ask for a review of your financial aid from your college, but it will take some time.

If you do not want to take out loans then you cannot afford to attend UIC. Go to work for a year and save up money or go to a community college.

bobo44 --that’s exactly what my daughter is doing too. full time summer job, extra jobs, contributing a few $Ks of her own and no unsubsidized loans. Yep; works for us.

OP: sometimes schools will offer departmental scholarships once you have been there a semester or two and have a school GPA; something to consider down the line. but i’m guessing all the scholarships have been given out by now for the school.
