NEED YOUR HELP: I am a Mentor (Like an RA) Interested in Putting on an Event

Hello College Confidential,

I work as a Peer Mentor in my residential dormitory (3 floors). If you would like to know more, feel free to ask. (We get similar training to that of RAs here and also Mentor specific training.)

I've decided to post on College Confidential because I need help in generating ideas for an event. This event will be hosted solely by me and must be academic related. (Usually I put on events with my colleagues who live in other buildings so I do find this to be intimidating).

Even though I do not have to do this, I want to. So many people I meet with complain about not knowing anyone in the building. There's a disconnect practically on every floor which honestly comes down to the RAs who aren't doing the greatest of jobs. As a Mentor though, I feel like I have the power, being that I work with and know many students on all floors, to do something about it.

My only goal and objective is to get building residents mingling with each other and to get a nice turnout.

What kind of game or activity can I make up or have to make this a fun event for the building residents to participate? Keep in mind it has to be academic related.

If you can help me generate some ideas, I would be forever grateful, College Confidential.

Sincerely,

I put on an info session for study abroad, internships, job opportunities, etc, could that count as academic? It was just an easy place for residents to get information about things they were interested in. There was also food, which motivated people to come.

Or, what about a jeopardy type game? You get paired up with someone you don’t know and as a group you must answer questions (either about different academic subjects, about the school, etc). That way you meet someone new and learn at the same time!
