Hi everyone, I have heard that people have negotiated their financial aid with certain colleges by saying they are getting more aid from another school, is this actually truthful? I have been accepted to George Washington and given two academic scholarships adding up to 40k and financial aid at 6k for the year, but I really would like to attend Boston College who only offered me 3.5k for the year. Is there any way I can contact Boston College and inform them that I would really like to attend their institution but I would need more aid to do so? Thanks guys.

You can contact the financial aid office and ask…but there is no guarantee they will even listen to your request. It sounds like you must have gotten MERIT aid from George Washington and need based aid from BC. If BC determined your NEED to be a certain amount, they won’t care at all that another school gave you merit money…it’s just not the same kind of aid.

Be careful in using the word “negotiate.” FA don’t like the word. You can ask for reconsideration for more aid.

I am in a similar situation. I was admitted to Pomona College and Amherst College. Pomona gave me slightly more, is it worth asking Amherst for more aid? Do you think they will reconsider?

Yes, it is worthwhile talking to Amherst as Pomona is a peer school. Ask for a review or reassessment of your FA package and mention that you got a better package from Pomona.

They will ask for a copy of the award letter from the other college. So, don’t lie.
