I'm an actress in NYC, and applied and got into the Neighborhood Playhouse, AMDA, AADA, Circle in the Square, School for Film and Television. I am pretty sure I am going to go to the Neighborhood Playhouse, it seems to have the best program and rep. What are everyones views on this school and the others? Is this the right choice?

Im pretty sure thats where Sherie Renee Scott trained... Shes outstanding, so It cant be that bad

I am sorry to not be able to help you that much. When you ask which is the right choice, I do not know how anyone could answer that without knowing what criteria/preferences you have for a school/program. The right choice is the one that best fits what you are looking for.

I am not familiar enough with each of those programs to give you much advice. My D's voice and acting teachers are on the faculty at Circle in the Square (they are great) and we know others who have done the summer program there. In terms of reputation, I would say CITS or Neighborhood Playhouse over AMDA.

A parent who posts here, Chrism, recently visited some of the programs on your list and while she does not have a child attending any of them, perhaps she can shed some light given any knowledge she gleaned from her research and visits. Are you going for acting or musical theater? Good luck to you and congrats on all of your acceptances!

Thank you so much :) I'm going strictly for acting. I've been dancing for 17 years now, and much of that has been professional, but all i've ever really wanted to do was act. I have a lot of experience, I've done over 25 shows all over, attending Oxford University's summer program for theater, SUNY Purchase for theater and much more. So I really am looking for the best of the best right now. It seems that Neighborhood has the most impressive alumni, and the program seems wonderful to me. I just wasn't sure how it looked in the theater world and stuff, b/c I know AMDA is a joke to most people. Thanks.

For reputation only, I'd say Neighborhood Playhouse or CITS. As I do not know the specifics of each program, I would then suggest to put reputation aside (though consider it and thus keeping to just these TWO programs of your list), then brainstorm on paper all the attributes of each program....what appeals to you, any drawbacks, etc. Once you have a list of everything about each one, it might become clear as to which really suits what you were looking for in a program. Either one has a good reputation and then you need to compare the specifics because it is important that the school feels like a good fit or match to your criteria/preferences.

Is there some reason you were not interested in a BFA degree program?

I originally attended SUNY Purchase, but found out it wasn't for me. I wanted a more strict program where ALL I do is act, sing and dance. I have never been a real "school" person, so this seemed like the best choice for me.

Hey I'm really trying to find out a lot of info about neighborhood playhouse and i ran across your post. Did you end up going? I would just love to hear from you...it seems people on here don't know 2 much about it.

Thanks so much,
grace

I'm sorry of course people on this post know about it... I meant college confidential as a whole

I actually decided to go with the Playhouse so I am a current student there. It is the most amazing school in the world!

Need2Leave...this is a forum for Musical Theater and Neighborhood Playhouse is for acting, not MT. You might want to post your query on the Theater College thread on the Arts Major Forum....more folks interested in Drama post there. Also, you might want to contact ChrisM as I believe she or her daughter has visited this program and might know some specifics to questions you have. If you can visit and talk to current students, that would be best.

Thanks soozievt, but it looks like linz is actually attending Neighborhood Playhouse, so I would love to talk with her about it.. Linz can you tell me what it's like? Also could you talk a little bit about the admissions process...
grace

You are all set then and I am glad.....what happened was that I posted at the same time as Linz did so her post did not appear when I was trying to help you. So, now that she posted that she attends....you have a great person to talk to after all! Yay! :)

I'm also interested in knowing about the ins and outs of the program, since Neighborhood and Circle are my two choices of schooling and I'm having a heck of a time deciding.

BreakIntoSong....are you already admitted to both? If not, while it is VERY important to investigate each school as much as you can, you really do not have to DECIDE yet because sometimes the decision is made FOR you. If you are lucky and get into both, then of course, you can only attend one. Have you visited each one already and met with faculty and current students or observed any classes? Try to do that at each one and often the decision will be clearer. Also, isn't CITS for MT and Playhouse for Acting or are you just trying for Acting at both?

I am so greatful for this post! These are both options that my D is considering and has her audition with CITS this Saturday. She has already interviewed for NP. My D has heard nothing but great things about both of these schools from working casting directors that she has met. The choice I think boils down to whether or not you want a college degree at this point in your life. My d is excited about getting the intensive professional training without having to focus on the other liberal arts stuff. I am glad to hear from current students. I do have a question about living arrangements....did you rent an apartment?

How old is your D? I also really want to go to NP, I just want to focus on my craft...so I can definitley relate

My D will be 19 in August. She spent 6 weeks in NYC doing the CAP 21 summer workshop last summer and loved it. She recently went to LA to audition with some schools and to meet with some casting directors. She is seriously considering the professional route first.

soozievt -
I haven't auditioned/interviewed at either, I'm going to try to do that sometime this summer, since I'll be in NYC for a summer program. I still have to work on my references, since I really don't have any. I mean I would gladly go to whichever I get accepted. While CITS has an MT track, I noticed that Playhouse looks like it has a better dance component to the training. And since dance honestly isn't a strong point for me, I think it might help if I have a more concentrated training. My main goal would be MT, however the thought of branching out into TV and Film as well makes Playhouse seem more the logical choice.

I do have a question for anyone who has applied, it says you need three recommendations, yet on the app it only has a space for a "Personal Reference" and "Professional Reference"; would the third be whoever was paying?

NOCCAMOM and her daugher already know this, but be sure you understand that NP considers itself the birthplace and continuing studio of pure Meisner and all classes are based in that methodology.
