My S will be starting Tulane this Fall. What is the neighborhood like as far as a convenient grocery store or drugstore in order to buy day to day items like laundry detergent, shampoo etc? Where are the surrounding areas that you should NOT venture into?

There are a few drug stores fairly close, and of course the Tulane bookstore and I think another store in Bruff that carries basic supplies. For groceries I know there is a Whole Foods on Magazine, and a Super WalMart that can both be accessed by the Tulane shuttle or, in the case of Whole Foods at least, by streetcar and a short walk.

As far as where not to go, the general area around Tulane is pretty safe. My D walks alone to these drug stores and other shops in the area during the day with no problems. Nighttime of course is a different story, just for common sense reasons. But there is almost always someone else that wants to head over that way anyway because there are places to eat, book shops, clothing stores, etc. The areas of New Orleans not to go to are not that close and quickly become known to the students. As is often said on here, if the student uses general common sense and awareness, they should be just fine.

At the end of Broadway there’s a gas station type thing without the gas.

I typically go there.
