My son got accepted to IIT for architecture. What is the neighborhood like? Is the campus safe?

I’ll be totally honest, the neighborhood surrounding IIT is not very bad, but once you get past certain points it is not a good idea to be alone. I personally have never felt unsafe while in the surrounding area. On-campus however is extremely safe. It was actually named one of the safest campuses in Chicago. Public safety are going around campus 24 hours a day and there are emergency call centers everywhere around campus with about a 10-20 second response time. I always have felt safe both on and off campus.

The campus is one of the safest campuses around; on top of having a topnotch public safety department, the headquarters of the Chicago Police Department is across the street from the south end of campus. The block immediately south of the campus is just fine but you can’t really go any further south than that. Going west to Bridgeport or west and north to Chinatown is also just fine. It’s also very safe to go to the Red Line or Green Line El stations to take a train into downtown. You wouldn’t go late at night except in a group, but that’s true for ANYWHERE in a big city. I’ve been at IIT for 18 years and I’ve been nervous on campus only once, and that was because I was loading computers into my car at night. Even then all I had to do was call public safety and they sent an officer right over to escort me; they will provide the same service for anyone in the campus community.
