Your stats are impressive and very well within the high range (75%) for Swarthmore. Congratulations! Swarthmore also admits about 2-3 candidates from Nepal every year. The class of 2008 has 3 people from Nepal. Send a good application with attention paid to the 'Why Swarthmore' essay. Good luck!

If you are from the Budhanilkantha School, your chances are probably very good. Swarthmore accepts 2 or 3 students each year from this school in Nepal. One of this year's freshmen from Katmandu is in my daughter's Physics study group.

Here is a link to current Swarthmore students who serve as "international ambassadors" for the admissions office.

The Nepalese student's e-mail is listed. I suggest that you e-mail him for specific information on Nepalese international apps along with any specific questions about what it's like to move halfway around the world from Katmandu to the Village of Swarthmore! I believe that Swarthmore would be a very comfortable, friendly place for a student making that kind of transition -- more so than most US colleges.

I don't know for sure, but I have strong suspicion that the bulk of international acceptances come from a small number of schools around the world that have relationships with US colleges. The placements in top US schools from Budhanilkantha in Nepal are astonishing and very consistent from year to year.

i have already submitted my applications but still what do i need to have in "Why Swarthmore?"

i was mailed by swarthmore admission office that int applicant who apply for fin aid have a chance of 1 in 26 only. wow thats a very slim chance i guess.

if there are any int students applying ed 2 at swarthmore could u plz post ur stats here. thanx guys

1 in 26? hmm so be it

Abhay:

You don't need to worry about stats. Yours are very high.

As for 1 in 26 odds, my hunch is that those odds vary considerably depending on specific situations. I've already mentioned that certain international schools have obvious relationships. I would also guess that there are financial aid situations as well. For example, it is entirely possible that a Swarthmore alumni donated endowment money 40 years ago earmarked for finanicial aid to Nepalese students. Or, there may be Nepali government scholarships. I have no idea, but logic tells me that there is some specific historic reason that two or three Nepalese students enroll at Swathmore every year. That is not random chance.

None of this kind of thing could be known outside of people intimately involved in admissions from that country. If I were Nepalese student, I would want to talk to the guidance counselor at the school I mentioned about odds. That person is probably the world's leading expert on Nepalese college admissions!

thanx for the encouraging words

the reason i am worried is that two of my friends from my school who had applied ed 1 were outright rejected. they have nearly similar stats as mine.

oh i forgot to confirm that i am from budhanilkantha school.

Abhay:

The US college enrollments from your school over the last five years or so that I looked at are nothing short of amazing. Every year, there are a two or three dozen amazing acceptances including many at Ivies, many at the top liberal arts colleges. A very impressive list. Being number 7 in your class is the same as saying you are #7 in your entire country. So, from that standpoint, you have nothing to worry about.

Why do some kids from your school get accepted to one college and not to another? I have no idea. My hunch is that US admissions from your school are more like "arranged marriages" than random kids mailing in applications and taking their chances. I would bet that the admissions officers are in direct contact with your school's guidance counselors reviewing the list of applicants from your school that year, both in terms of "good fit" for each college and finanicial aid issues.

Unfortunately, I have no idea of the specifics of that process, so there is no way to say that you will be the one that gets an acceptance and aid package from Swarthmore, or the one that gets it from Williams, or Hamilton, or wherever. For example, more than 80% of the Swarthmore international students receive financial aid, but I don't have a clue how that aid is determined.

Your guidance counselor is the expert on Nepalese admissions. What does he/she say?

actually i dont think anything is arranged from our school side at all.
to be saying the truth our guidance counselors know very little about colleges in the us. we do all the college selection and the guidance counselors are of very little help. they just inform us if other students are applying at the same colleges. that all.
guidance counselors are actually our head of houses with no specialized knowledge of the colleges. and i dont think they have any contacts with the colleges in the us. life would be so much easier for us if our school had a real guidance counselor.

Anyway, now that you have applied, there is no point in worrying about it, is there? Just wait for the decision....and remember, your school does have a very good record of admissions to US schools.

ya thats true.
there is no point in being worried
but i guess its really hard not to be worried though
one question:
i have made a car game in macromedia flash
will it help me with the colleges if i send it?
thank you

Most colleges don't like extra cds etc. For example, Stanford specifically says not to send stuff. Mention the game somewhere in your application, but make sure the colleges want it by going to their website and searching or by emailing the admissions officer.
I don't know about Swarthmore specifically. You should ask the person whom you are in contact with at the admissions office.

abhay........u'll surely get into swarthmore........dont worry

that will make life for us a hell lot easier.........
