nepali thread.

btw, aaron, i've been serioulsy considering not applying to Washington Univ. they've costs have gone up to like 48$ thou, but their average need based aid is only like 25$ thou. how do figure to get the rest? merit? ekdaam garo hola

oh yeah, btw, Jai Nepal! Peace

yea.. the rest is academic scholarships for which there is fierce competition. some of these scholarships are full tuition + stipend. so if you can get one of these... well, life will be good.

i renounced wustl ED for u, u can't just give it up! :)

but it's tough for sure. and getting tougher by the year. but they attract a lot of their applicants through persistent advertising, so don't let the acceptance rate worry you. my 2 paisa!

dude, i know ur good and i know i'm good, but trust me, you'll be shocked at the kinda stats that roll in from other applicants. and anyway, for business, they have like one scolarship with six seats. you seriously think i have a chance in like a thousand students? HELP!! what should i do?

or should i just apply simply for need based aid and pray to fairy god mother that they have mercy on me and give much more dough. i dont wanna not apply , i like it so much!! but then im worried abt the aid part as well.

i know applicants to wustl have exceptional stats and ec's. anything you can do about it? no.

just put your best into your app and hope for the best. but do apply for merit based aid as well... you can never tell. even if you get $25,000-30,000 in need-based aid, you might get partial merit-based scholarship. and you'll be rolling in dough :)

you are applying ED, so your chances are good i'd assume.

thanx,
so many ppl to wish me... i will be fit and fine soon.
well, i'm taking sat 2 in nov, so will have to wait until dec for sat 1 if i get eeky scores this time.
ani for ed i'm applying to mt.holyoke because i've loadsa ecas and they just give a dam to SAT so i've a bit of chance to try
seems like ecveryone is from bnks and i'm the odd one out :-#

smith, mt. holyoke, wellesley and all are good schools and give good aid. u girls are lucky!
and not everyone's frm bnks!

yea, i'm from patan high school

there are women's colleges but the competition is fierce, very fierce.

wow, great to see an up-and-rolling thread here. abt applying early to wusl, go for it!!! the average aid does not necessarily reflect how much u get. u might get 50000 bucks while someone might be paying the whole thing, which would put the average at 25000. besides, the US application procedure is weird, at best, and you never know what happens. apply for merit based aid as well and hope for the best.

thanks a lot, been having serious doubts abt applying..hell, ill jus try my luck i guess....and yea, hopefully this thread will continue and we help each other...do tell other neplais abt this thread

well, good to hear that you have made up your mind. i m sure u know that wusl is a really tough school to get into, so work hard on ur application. what r ur stats, btw? a lot depends on luck too, so u can never tell what happens.
good luck anyways.
oh yeah, initiate maximum contact with the admissions dept of the college u want to get into. if possible, try to maitain an email relationship with the dean or asst dean of admissions. this counts a lot because it shows that u r really interested. talk to them informally about how interested you are and stuff like that. let them know who you are as a person through informal emails. once they can place a name on an application, ur case becomes a lot easier. the associate dean knew me pretty well even before the decisions were made and I believe that helped a lot.
bottomline, the more you work on your application and make yourself heard (weird phrase huh), the more your chances of getting in.

hey chocu.thanks for teh reply and teh tips..will pm u my stats. btw, you think u could elaborate more on maintaining an informal rapport with teh admissions office..i mean, how do i write the mails...hey!! im mr blah blah! what else do i say?

Well.... communication and informal rapprt with adcomm is gud .. provided u do it the right way . 7 mails in 7 days would do u no gud and probabably worsen the applicant . Howevr regular informative queries reg. the application and several requirement pertaining ur case will be helpful....... Just be formal in the mails and try to be realistic (true)

:):)

that's a good point, 7 mails in 7 days isnt a good idea, if u dont have anything to say!! but if u have sth genuine to ask abt or sth like that, heck, go ahead!!! of course, it depends on the adcom as well, but if its a friendly adcom, like the one at my college, u will be amazed by how easy and frequent communication will be! an example, it would be 3 in the morning and i would be having email chats with the associate deans!!! since i got in, i m assuming that those contacts didnt hurt my chances.
good luck guys. hope u get in some place good.

Guys, one questions. I know the averaged aid of Wash U. Do you think i could mail them asking how coomon it is for them to give 90% need based scolarship? A friend says it is possible for me to directly write to them asking what it is the minimum amount i will have to by default pay, but i am highly skeptical that i can do this

just ask them!!! it shudnt be a big deal. make it clear to them that u cant attend college if u have to pay more than a certain amt of money. its best to know early so that if they cant give u what u want, u can switch and apply to some other college. be polite and allt hat stuff though.

yea it's always a good idea to ask if there's a minimum amount (after scholarships) an international student is expected to pay. i've done that with a lot of colleges and sometimes some colleges specifically tell you how much you might have to chip in even after you get the best possible finaid package. and it doesn't hurt to ask.

Btw, does anyone know if Bucknell gives you good aid? I asked the college and they say "even if one were to receive a full tuition scholarship, one would need to have $12,000-$17,000 per academic year to support one's education here."
Do colleges give more than they state they can give?

damnit. was looking at Bucknell too
