nerd vs geek

title ..........................

Geek- an unfashionable or socially inept person

Nerd- an intelligent in a particular discipline of profession

Recently, being the geek seems like it means being off-center, being naturally non-conformist (not really rooting from that rebellious natures most teenagers have ). Peiple these days see that as "unique" and "following yourself"

That's all true and dandy, but people these days are overdoing and becoming people they're not.

Geek is just so much more of a disgusting word than nerd.
Geek is like "wow I'm gross" and nerd is like "Hmm let me think about how gross that I probably am" Lol.

Oh dear god...

^ I agree with zfox001's definition. I would rather be called a nerd than a geek.

-What would you rather be called?

At least at my school, "nerd" has a more negative connotation than "geek." Then again, we do tend to lump them all together...

I'd say that geeks tend to have more hands-on knowledge, whereas nerds know long lists of facts, stats, etc. So, I'm a nerd, and my boyfriend is a geek. He can build robots, but he'd be horribly out of place on my Quiz Bowl team.

In my school and environment, they're about the same.

Geek means you won't succeed in the stereotypical HS world that really doesn't exist today except in some states... like Georgia perhaps. But you will succeed in the real world, because your uniqueness will serve you well in many of the booming silicon valley-ish careers.

Nerd is just like... you're really interested in intellectual pursuits. Take an average person, with, say 30% focus on learning, 30% on the opposite sex, and 30% on sports, and or a nerd lump all or most of that focus onto intellectual pursuits.

^ hah!

My personal definitions:

Nerd: One who demonstrates profound intelligence along with a relatively strong work ethic. Well rounded academically with the exception of one area of supreme expertise

Geek: Not necessarily as intelligent as a nerd, but usually very technologically literate. Video games, programming, and hacking are more important than grades.

Dork: No remarkable intelligence/talents and socially awkward.

In our school nerd just means someone who is very smart and a geek is someone who is not necessarily smart but is just socially awkward and a loser.

Nerds can be cool and funny. Geeks shelter themselves in insular environments and are neither cool nor funny.
