I'd LOVE to be a vocal performance major, but I know virtually nothing about different programs, etc. What kind of things should I look for in a program? What kind of career opportunities are available afterwards? If I haven't done extremely intensive work in high school, will I be able to cut it in a good program? (I want to pursue music as a secondary major to English.)

Any information anyone could provide would be incredibly helpful.. I'm just starting to seriously consider this, but I want to find out a bit first!

Only the very gifted singers manage to make a living with their voices. Most migrate to music education or college teaching, or music therapy, music industries, etc. What kind of music do you enjoy performing? Are you a good "performer"? Certainly an English major can study voice, too, but few schools allow for a performance minor. Good luck.

jegan - I don't have time this morning to find all the threads here that would help you, but there are some good ones that will give you lots of reading material. Go up to the search function at the top of the page and search on the words "performance major" or "double major" or "performance minor" or just page through the threads here. It will give you a real good headstart on understanding what is involved in majoring, minoring, jobs available, and so on, and will probably answer most of your questions.

General advice about being a performance major is usually along the lines of "If you can imagine yourself doing anything else at all, do it." Performance is a risky major and not for the faint of heart.

Binx describes what I see in the truly passionate current or potential performance majors. There just isn't any other choice in what they are doing, and they have never questioned it, even if everyone else has!
