Nervous

Well, second post on here. High school freshmen, our first quarter is ending in two weeks. I was a perfect student in 8th grade, my grades were spotless. Sadly this isn't the case this year (so far).

Our second progress report came out today and I have a B in PEarth Science (freshmen honors science course). Well, this may not be my only bad grade after the typing teacher puts her grades in. I'm buying a program for that though, so I'm hoping to raise it.

Is this going to hurt me down the long run? I already put so much time in my studies, hours a night and my school seems so depressing. Am I just overly worrying?

You’re a freshman. There’s seriously no need to stress out. Some colleges don’t even count freshman year when evaluating applications, and we’re talking places like Stanford, Princeton, and the UC’s. As long as your UW GPA remains within the 3.8-4.0 range, you’ll be a solid candidate for any top school - the Ivies, even.

Well, you only have a B in one class. It’s fine. Besides, it’s honors too. It is supposed to be harder.

Nah man. People want to see a well-rounded student. A “B” will not get you into any of the top colleges in the nation. You better start forgetting about the HYPS. Heck, I’d even doubt they’d except you to a 4-year college. Good luck at some community college.

//Heck, I’d even doubt they’d EXCEPT? you to a 4-year college.//

I agree with efforts. Your future isn’t looking too rosy. Forget about HYPSM; perhaps even state school - with grades like those, you’d need to be a first gen/URM/recruited athlete to get into your state school. I’d call your local community college a match, but consider applying to the local McDonald’s for a safety.

OMG one B. Big freakin deal. You are most likely not going to do as well in freshman year as you did in middle school. Deal with it.

Now, now. This OP needs reassurance.

For my advice, I suggest that you forget the Ivies and Stanford/MIT, at least for now. With ONE B in freshman year? Seriously? You’re supposed to be ripe, fresh, hence the word freshman. So you must have all As. If you don’t have the “ripe” grades, the “ripe” schools won’t accept you ^^ Think of it like that.

You know what, you need to work hard. Have you had SAT prep yet? If you haven’t had them since sixth grade, you have a lot of catching up to do. I suggest just trying to raise your SAT score to 2400. And also, if you’re planning to major in biology/medicine/etc then you need to get 100s on your next grades alright? And then go into AP and ace those as well. You should start looking for internships to balance that B. It won’t be enough for an Ivy, but it’ll give you a shot at UC Merced, you know?

Actually, not only the Ivies. Forget all the top 50 or so schools and the 25 or so LACs. In fact, don’t even apply to them. You can, if you want. I’m sure schools up to, say, NYU will consider looking at your app after your GPA, but beyond that you shouldn’t even try.

I hope that was the warm, touching, and sincere advice you needed, OP ^^

I have not decided yet whether or not this is a ■■■■■.

This isn’t a ■■■■■.

I’m just discouraged when I come here and see freshmen taking such advanced courses, still getting A’s while I’m going to a school that I feel lacks advanced courses.

Sorry if I rubbed the wrong way, but everyone here has such impressive transcripts.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. With all the sarcastic replies, I’ll just take it as I’m doing fine.

While we may have been sarcastic, it wasn’t by much.

With HYPSM they’re GLOATING when they find ANY fault, since it means they’re thinning down their already-stellar applicant pool.
