I'm a freshman in highschool, and its been hell! I am now at this moment on a suspension, I got in a fight and have been thinking about college a lot lately. I just got my first high school report card. It wasn't anything I need for any college I want to go to, but sad thing is its the best report card I've had since 4th garde!!! I'm not sure what to do or where to start improving.. I just need a little guidance and was wondering if anyone could help, my gardes are as follows:

English:80
Social Studies:89
Earth Science:72
Math A:76
Latin 1:94
Studio Art:81
Gym:90

I know those aren't the gardes I need, and I want to go to NYU.. so can anyone help me out?

Ok, first of all, your ONLY a freshmen. You have PLENTY of time to buckle down and start getting better grades. Coming from experience, I would hold it off and would worry about doing better NEXT year. Save yourself a lot of stress and do a really good job in H.S. Your GPA is riding on these years! NYU doesn't admit everyone! :) Good luck, and hit the books! :) Of course, have fun too, you have to experience the joys of highschool.

I second the comment about calming down. There's no reason to be thinking seriously about colleges right now. By the time you're ready to apply, you may not even want to go to NYU.

What you should do is start working harder and get involved in activities you're interested in. Have a good time.

I agree with everyone about calming down. HOWEVER

If you think you could improve your efforts in school - and genuinely want to - you have your work cut out for you right now so stop stressing and study! here are some bits of advice if your work seems to go nowhere. It helped a lot of my friends to make vocabulary flashcards for Earth Science & read the textbook a bunch of course. Take notes as you read if the information does not stick and DO NOT take 6 pgs. notes for 5 pgs. reading! Only write down notes after reading the whole section. Study orally, with friends, whatever floats your boat; know details. For math do many practice problems (my teacher, when people asked, was happy to run off some sheets)...is it algebra? Note that I decided I hated math so I didn't do any practice problems and I got a B. It is your choice whether or not to take that example. There are two approaches I've found that h.s. teachers take towards English: either adopt a heavily content-based format, in which you should read the chapters at least twice each and maybe sit down on a weekend and read the whole book as if for the first time, or an analysis/discussion based (i believe preferable) based format, in which you should analyze the books according to what you think the author is trying to say. If you tend to miss these cues, I'd suggest reading a book outside of class (the College Board website has a listof recommended books many of which you will read during high school along with though I shudder something like Sparknotes followed by critical essays if you can find them (for authors like shakespeare it is very easy; for others not.) Read it section by section YOURSELF, maybe taking notes if that helps you, and try to find symbolism, metaphor, meaning, theme, little allusions and just fun things like that. Also contemplate the author's point in writing, tone...you get the idea. Check your ideas against the sparknotes and do not be afraid to disagree. just a made up exercise in literary critical thought....you seem to be doing okay in history. What can I say for this except study, notes. This is all much easier if you actually enjoy school which is possible. And I think my art grade is worse than yours so

Finally congratulations on your Latin grade & the choice to take it in the first place!! Read literature ASAP. :)

One option for later, is to go to a community college for the first 1 or 2 years, then it's easy to transfer to a better college. I'm not positive that it works that way everywhere but it's definitley a good option for getting into your choice school.

Teh sooner you bring up those grades the better. I dont know why of of the CCers say not to worry about your grades until NEXT year. Every year counts in highschool. You need to start off on the right track so your cumulative GPA will be high at the end of your senior year. Contiune taking the hardest classes you possibly can, with honors and AP, next year and bring up your freshmen grades NOW! Welcome to high school...

If this is your first visit to CC make sure it's your last for 2 years. You aren't ready to be sucked into this web of self-doubt caused by this website.

screw everyone in here. start gettign them grades up to solid A's. Take a couple ap's next year and all ap's junior year like me. as for now, do a bit of sat problems every day and buy problem solving books. get into some clubs and spread your reputation so you'll be an officer next year or the year after. do anything productive and everyhing possible.

you'll sooooo thank me for this before college apps in 2-3 years.

eh, dont stress u have alot more time to pull them up. i say if you really want to go to NYU or whatever, just focus- open that book and dont close it until you understand a concept.

put it like this man you just need to work hard and study, when your a senior you will realize how easy the college process is, and dont worry about taking AP classes, they wont keep you from college

you should just figure out your top 5 college choices
and look at their admissions requirements
i guarantee a C wont keep you out of a college
and forget goin to community college

o and NYU, just try to get those C’s to B’s but overall your report card is GOOD
im pretty sure if you want to go to NYU you will need a GREAT sat score, as the sat may be whats gets you in the school

Well perhaps the most important thing now is you need motivation. Maybe you aren’t trying hard enough (Gym: 90) because you don’t want to do the work. Know that if your grades are crap then you will not get the job you want and will end up working at McDonalds. If you bring your grades up then you should be able to get into the college you want and get the job you want and you will be making it rain.

btw: AP classes will probably be too much for you now, I would try to take as many Pre-AP classes as I could if I were you.

Be proactive in studying. It goes a long way to time manage.

Find out your strong suits. Im good at conceptual math and science, as well as memorizing. Thus I have fit my HS schedule to fit as much of these subjects as possible. If you are good at history, focus on english and history as your strong suits.

Identify your learning style. Believe it or not, people learn in different ways. I am a visual learner. By knowing your learning style you can find out the best way to study.

Buy a planner to put all of your hw in.This goes a long way as well.

Leave time for fun! Play hard and study hard.

Yeah… if the thread is actually already five and a half years old, how or why did you post in it? Who found it first? And bragging about it? “Wow, it’s six years old! A novelty I must post in!”

Useless… should be locked, moved, or deleted. Sorry, the dude is almost twenty now.

yeah screw what other people are saying to calm down and not worry about it, every year counts. start getting good study habits NOW so you don’t get screwed over your junior year because that’s when it really counts. your schedule looks pretty easy and you should be able to get all A’s. get a really high gpa your freshmen year so later if you do mess up in a class it won’t affect your gpa as much. seriously bro, get good grades, you can still enjoy highschool and get good grades.
