NE's 5 years of college

How exactly does this work...and does every student have to attend for 5 years?

it depends on ur major...

Here is a Chemical Engineering schedule:

<a href="http://www.coe.neu.edu/studentservices/files/FT_ChE_2012.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.coe.neu.edu/studentservices/files/FT_ChE_2012.pdf</a></p>

Follow either A or B and you'll see how it works.

And you can graduate in 4 years, but I think that completely defeats the purpose of going to Northeastern.

A lot of majors don't require 5 years. The only reason we do 5 years of school is because of co-op, which gives you up to a year and a half of work experience before you graduate.

If you choose not to co-op, you can graduate in 4 years. I also have a friend who is doing only one co-op and doing 4 years. But like said above, it defeats the purpose of NU. Students here love co-op and love that they have 5 years to put off going into the real world.

In some of the sciences (I know chemistry has it, at least) if you are in good academic standing and have a professor to sponsor you, you can take graduate classes and leave with a Masters of Science also. Most people who do that finish in 5 years with maybe a little less co-op than others. However I know of a girl going for the masters program and one co-op in four years... She is taking a lot of summer classes, though.
