Net Price Calculator for Internationals

Hey guys,

I'm an international and I found out that the Net Price Calculator is not applicable for internationals..
I would like to know how much aid I might be able to get..

Is there any way I can get my estimate?

Thank you :)

Check each school’s website to see if they even give money to int’l students at all.

I’m sorry about that, but as far as I know, because very few schools will ‘meet need’ for internationals, your aid is not determined until the college accepts you. They may decide that you are a student they will give full aid, partial aid, large part, small part or no aid. This is how it works out for many US students who apply to colleges that don’t guarantee to meet need too. If they run the calculator it can just show they have to pay the whole thing even if they don’t have much money. Colleges can decide to give the most money to students they want to attract the most, and leave student who are nice to have, but the college ran out of money for the year, with a large amout to come up with alone if the student wants to go. this is called ‘preferential packaging’.

So you know the ‘price’ of the college COA. For internationals many times that will be the price. There are some who will meet all or part of the need but they decide after they accept you. If you apply to a ‘meets full need for internationals’ school, the NPC might be a reasonable indication.

@GMTplus7 @BrownParent I’m applying to LACs that are known for giving Need-Based Financial Aid to internationals such as Colby, Kenyon, Colgate, Hamilton, and Macalester

OK, that is wise, but there is still no calculator. And they still may decide to admit those they can meet need for or do preferential packaging. If they admit only those they can meet need for (need aware), then the calculator might work out as an estimate. Why don’t you email the admissions office and ask them if there is anyway you can know an estimate ahead? Let us know.

You can look at CDS section H7

Colby 2013 -2014

Total enrolled internationals = 155
Internationals given need based aid = 101
average amount awarded = 50,080
total amount awarded - 5,058,000

So yes Colby does give alot.

@BrownParent Where did you get those stats?

The Common Data Set can be found on the school’s website.

You may want to see if each school’s net price calculator specifically asks if you are an international student. If it does, it may take that into account when estimating financial aid (or lack thereof).
