Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about the New England Theatre Conference's summer stock auditions. I was thinking of applying, but I am fairly new to the summer stock scene as a BFA MT freshman. Do a lot of theatres attend NETCs? Any success stories out there? Thanks for all the help! It's always appreciated!

I attended NETC as a performer MANY years ago, and did get job offers from attending theaatres.

I now attend as a producer, and do hire performers from the auditions.

Basically it is a big “cattle call” audition. You present your 2 minute audition package for the theatres in attendance, and theatres call back those they would like to meet or see more from.

It is a competitive application process to get an audition slot, but if you do not get a slot they still will distribute your application form to all of the theatres in attendance.

My D (who is an MT freshman) had all her application forms submitted before the holidays for the NETC, so I don’t know if it is too late now to go that route. She has not heard back from them yet,; hopefully soon. But as KatMT said, they do fill up. Good luck and I hope you’re not too late.

The application deadline for NETC is Feb 1, I believe… so it is not too late. NETC seems to notify everyone around the same time, generally after the application deadline.

It is competitive to get an audition slot in terms of reviewing the applications. I know some applicants in the past who have applied very early and not received a slot, and some who just make the deadline and do get a slot.

Kat, do you know how NETC decides who gets a slot or who doesn’t? I know kids who attend top MT programs who were selected to audition as actors only, or who didn’t even get an audition. It’s curious how they make those decisions, especially as they don’t (like SETC) have an actual screening audition, so they are pretty much judging all candidates based on an application.

They do make decisions based completely on the application. I believe the NETC auditions chairperson and staff make the decisions and that they are trying to put together a mix of auditionees – range of ages, schools, training and experience – to meet the varied needs of the attending theatre companies.

I could be wrong but my impression is that they get so many college aged kids that being Freshman or Sophomore is a disadvantage as Juniors and Seniors have more training and experience generally.

I’ve heard the same amtc, but I figured I’d apply anyway. As of right now I was granted a Strawhat audition, but I was just hoping for NETCs as well! Unlike Strawhats however, I’ve read that they don’t make decisions until after the deadline and typically people don’t find out if they have an audition until about 3 weeks before the weekend of auditions. Thanks for all the help everyone!

I have many friends who are college freshman who are applying, so once we see if they are approved or not I can always post back with some sort of ratio. But it won’t help you at this point! I do know of people in my department who are sophomores now that went last year, so it is possible! Strawhats also requires being approved via headshot/resume and application for an audition slot and I (as well as a few other freshman I know) were approved for that so I’m sure it’s something similar.
