How do I go about networking? I do know what it means but I'm really confused about how I should start going on about this. I really do not know anyone who works at the company for me talk to and do not have any connection. It would be grateful if anyone could provide some useful information.

It depends what you are networking for but a good step is to create a LinkedIn profile and fill it out completely. You’d be surprised how many connections you can make without actually needing to meet them in person.

When I first began as an internship I had never made business connections before. When I started networking with others I included a link to my LinkedIn profile after all my emails in the signature. I also kept business cards with QR Codes to connect with me as well. These things worked great for me.

Yes I did fill out my linkedin and have created account but I how do I make connection using this? Would it be possible if you could tell me just how exactly I use Linkedin to make connections? thank you

Well, one thing you can do is use GMail and Facebook to connect to LinkedIn. You can select a bunch of your contacts whose profiles are found, and you can connect with anyone you feel comfortable connecting with. That will get you a base network; from there, just keep an eye on it. If you meet a parent’s friend, connect with her! Connect with professors/lecturers, TAs, graduate students, etc.

People are encouraged not to become Facebook friends with someone unless they know the person well. The reason for this is simple - Facebook accounts contain a lot of personal information that could potentially be used against someone. LinkedIn is exactly the opposite; loose connections can turn into job opportunities very quickly, so it makes sense to connect with as many people as you can. The comparison between the two social networking sites continues: on Facebook, your main concern is keeping your profile clean so that if someone looks, you will not be ruled out of a job, but on LinkedIn, your main concern is making yourself marketable so that someone will want to look and potentially offer you a job.
