A bunch of you guys use the term "Networking" without mentioning any specifics. What exactly is meant by this? Does it mean making a lot of friends with those in the business fields? Does it mean talking to professors?

Thank you for your help, and please excuse my ignorance.

my sisters friends husband is helping me right now with finding jobs/internships. thats networking.

my sisters husband has many friends working for good firms who keep him (and eventually me) posted on new position openings. thats networking.

my cousin is doing his mba and has many friends working in good firms whom keep him (and eventually me) posted on new position openings. thats networing.

when i meet random alumni, i keep conversation and ask what they do. sometimes they ask for a number or resume and keep me posted on new job openings at where they work. thats networking.

i attend internship workshops/seminars and recruiting events on campus. i walk around and meet recruiters from good firms. i hold conversation and tell them about myslef. this eventually leads to the recruiter asking for my resume. we exchange contacts. thats networking.

in addition, you have to able to be confident and outgoing to hold conversation with these people.
