NEU financial aid for international student

Hi! I was accepted into Northeastern Class of 2024, and I am an international student from Pakistan. I initially applied with no financial aid and did not seek it out, but in light of the current situation my dad is worried about the finances. Northeastern does not give out need based scholarships to international students, or at least thats what I found, it only gives merit scholarships. I’m wondering if there is any chance that I can get some scholarship either starting before this year or early next year? Any advice or suggestion is deeply appreciated. If there are any international students who have been to NEU and asked for aid please let me know about your experience.

You need to contact Northeastern’s financial aid.

If you didn’t apply for initial FA during the application process, you may be out of luck.

Contact the school. They will be inundated because so many students’ financial situations have changed.

Northeastern has never given need based aid to international students. You can contact admissions or financial aid offices but if you did not qualify for merit aid before chances are slim now.

You can ask what opportunities may be available. Unfortunately, it would be rare for a university to offer you a significant merit-based scholarship after you have already pledged to enroll, and additional scholarships for returning students are usually small. (My college had small awards like $300 for the best first-year student of French or $2,000 for an outstanding junior science major.)

If you have serious doubts about your ability to pay for your undergraduate education at Northeastern, I would urge you to defer your enrollment for a year. That would give you the option to re-apply to universities in the US and the rest of the world. Most scholarships are awarded to freshman applicants - once you enroll, the odds of getting a scholarship as a transfer student are astronomically small.

What other options do you have?

For us as a relatively local and domestic (US) student, NEU was just plain way over budget. D went somewhere else.

The impact of the coronavirus on the world’s economy is having a significant impact on a lot of university plans right now.

In virtually all situations, international students who don’t apply for aid aren’t in the same pool of applicants as internationals who do apply for aid. As a result, you can’t get any aid if you didn’t apply for it.

@MYOS1634 international students at northeastern cannot apply for aid. Merit aid is awarded without application.
