Good day friends,
Lost international student here needing some guidance.
I am about to graduate from santa monica (community) college and have been accepted for a couple of transfers.
I am now contemplating between my top 2 choices,
- Northeastern university in the bachelor of science in international business china program
- Columbia university school of general studies majoring in financial economics and minoring in philosophy.
Im in quite the dilemma here as I really like the program outlined by NEU and feel that it will benefit me mroe careerwise.
BUT, I feel as though my time in columbia and nyc with that particular combination of major/minor will serve to develop me into a more wholesome individual.
I know this is a personal choice ultimately but any opinions or advice would be so very helpful.
Cheers
Reggie
How much will each cost to attend?
Columbia is Columbia. If cost isn’t different, to me, this isn’t a hard choice.
If your goal is to go into finance, Columbia will serve you a whole lot more than Northeastern. Location is one thing, but both Boston and NYC are financial centers. It’s more the Columbia name; finance is a prestige-driven field and Columbia has the best recruiters and companies on-campus every year looking for fresh young financiers.
The OP said that s/he was an international student. That would impact his or her ability to work in the US after graduation.
Have you researched the co-op program with Northeastern? Co-ops are a huge part of NEU’s academics and will affect your career placement and opportunities in Boston and throughout the country. However, Columbia is also a very great school that will give you great opportunities in NYC and throughout the country. I personally think Columbia will be better for you.
You need to ask each program, the career centers at each university, and the international students office at each university very specifically about career and internship placement for international students. Your ability to work in the US while in college and after college is governed by the OPT and CPT rules. http://www.ice.gov/sevis/practical-training Ask about their placement into positions in your home country and in other countries as well.
Right, what’s your citizenship?
If you are an EU citizen, for example, a Columbia degree likely will carry more weight than an NEU one. Same with HK (or pretty much anywhere else abroad as well).
