i used to think i wanted to be a neurologist, so i wanted to major in neuroscience in college. i've come to realize that that isn't what i want to do, but should i still pursue neuroscience over biology because it looks more impressive for med. schools?

It doesn't look more impressive. So you're better off pursuing whatever you think is most interesting. That way, your passion for your major when you write essays, get recommendations from your professors, and interview at medical schools will be impressive.

Did you consider neuroscience minor? Some people are doing it because most classes are part of their major (for example, zoology major) anyway so might as well declare minor.

Don't do anything to impress any one- do what you love- you can do it well and work hard at it to impress people, but the subject you pursue should be about you. What if you decide half way through college that you don't want med school after all, like so many kids do? You should pick a major you like not one to impress.

Nonsense. A Neuroscience Major is more impressive than a General Biology one, just like a Neurosurgery Residency is more impressive than a Pediatric one. It has to do with the complexity of the subject matter in question.

Adcoms are not immune to subjectivity and relevance.

That is really, really bad advice. Any advantage of 'impressiveness' of a neuroscience major (which is debatable, given that many such programs are a mix of psychology and biology) will be trumped by GPA and MCAT effects. In the end, you should do what you like best, as this well encourage a high GPA and will keep you sane...

Dude, where in my post did i give ANY advice?. I was just stating the fact that some majors are more "impressive" than others. People should major in whatever they feel comfortable with and excel at.

By the way, I do not know which programs in Neuroscience you are speaking about. For instance, if that is your major at Brown, you will end up learning more neuroscience than what a medical student learns throughout medical school (not biology nor psychology but neuroscience courses like neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology and the like). Your comment also tends to support what a lot of people argue about in here all the time: The school you attend makes a difference as well.

Thats a rather objective statement for someone who was making a point about this sort of thing being subjective and in the eye of the beholder.

Never really heard of neuroscience as being an impressive major. Maybe engineering or physics but there's debatable evidence whether med school adcoms even consider those majors.

you can major in sociology and learn a lot more than they teach in medical school...this forum is used to provide advice. I didn't realize you were just making a random statement without the intent for people to act on it - 'my bad'.
