Hey,

I am currently a senior in high school and I am thinking of going into neuroscience. Everything about it interests me and just really love it! The only thing is what can I do after I get my undergraduate in neuroscience? Do I almost need my masters or what? I just wanna know what routes are out there. Another note: I would do research however I dont think I would enjoy it that much. Also any other majors that are somewhat similar but have way better job outlook, etc. Thanks!!!

Hey! I was a prospective Neuroscience major once, so I did some research. In order to get anywhere, graduate work is necessary. Neuroscience is never really explored in undergraduate studies, but serves as the perfect basis for psychiatry, whether you want to be clinical or research-based. You could even go to law school and work in criminal psychology since Neuroscience is the study of the brain’s biology and criminals have all sorts of imbalanced brain neurons. As it stands, a Neuroscience undergrad is extremely specialized and therefore, yields less doors open in terms of career opportunity. You have to basically find a way to channel you’re Neuroscience into a more practical field since such a field is not very practical standing alone.

Yeah…the only jobs out there for neuroscience concentrators are 1) medicine and 2) research.

Medicine is a gold mine of opportunities to apply your neuroscience know-how to do socially meaningful work and make wads of cash, but of course is hard and stuff. Research is also difficult, without many job opportunities, low pay, but many people’s dream job (my dream job my dream job my dream job).

But whatever. I’m not sure what draws you into neuroscience, as it could be psychology, biology, or computer science. If it’s the latter two, major in those and minor or specialize in neuroscience. If it’s psychology, you’ll find there isn’t much of a difference

You will need either a Phd or an MD to have a career in neuroscience.

hey ram0267 what did you end up going in too?
