Hey,

I am a senior in hs and am fairly set on going into neuroscience! Does anybody know any good schools that offer a great program for an undergrad in neuroscience? It MUST be in the Midwest!

Thanks

University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, Wash U and NU.

Wash U seems to have a fairly strong program for neuroscience; one of my friends chose it over Johns Hopkins because of its neuroscience offerings (he was especially interested in the PNP program there). However, I think they also have a track for neuroscience in the biology major. Another school to consider is U Chicago, though I know a lot less about its neuroscience program.

Check out Case Western…great program with opportunities for research and internships

Mind if I ask what kinds of jobs you get in neuroscience? I know it’s a fascinating subject, but I keep hearing there are no jobs.

There are probably few specialized jobs in the area for someone with just a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, but plenty to do if you go to grad school or med school.

Thanks for all the info everyone!

Neuroscience is a new ‘in’ major that combines large doses of biology, brain anatomy, chemistry and to some extent psychology. However, in itself it doesn’t lead to any specific jobs, unless you manage to get in a lot of lab science experience which can then help you land a lab assistant job somewhere. But unless you plan on grad school or med school, don’t expect neuroscience to be terribly practical. In fact, with that major you may be at a disadvantage since you’ll be competing for the same lab assistant jobs with people who’ll have even more extensive backgrounds in biology and chemistry.
