Hey guys, can you tell me anything about Neurosciences? Is it difficult? Common courses of study. Also, can u recmommend some college that excel in Neurosciences. Thanks

The only school that I know of that offers neuroscience as a major is Hamilton College. But I'm very sure that if you go on www.review.com that you'll be able to look up colleges that offer the major.

Johns Hopkins HAS to have it, but I've not checked it myself.

ucsd has a top program as well...

thanks guys, i was also wondering.... I know USC has a neuroscience programs, but how well is USC in science? Also, how well is UCSB in science, preferably biology?

Check out UCLA. Brown. Duke. And yes JHU.

Bah! Check out the archives and search for both 'neuroscience' and 'neurobiology'. You'll find something.

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/baw.html (Look at ENS at the bottom)

Here's an online (choppy) textbook that you can browse: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?call=bv.View..ShowTOC&rid=neurosci.TOC&depth=2

Ah and I'll just throw in this one for fun: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/index.htm

Oh and whatever you do - don't subscribe to Scientific American MIND! It's useless. Their news/articles are adorned with odd pictures to capture your attention while simultaneously showing old old news... literally. I found an article in the latest SciAmMind that was from the July 2001 issue of Scientific American. :(

MIT has a neuroscience program (although it's called Brain and Cognitive Sciences, you can choose to specialize in neuroscience).

Schools with good neuroscience programs that I'm looking at for grad school include Harvard, MIT, UCSF, Stanford, and Caltech. I've heard UCSD's program is very good too.

Many schools now offer Neuroscience as a major. My daughter will be a first year Neuroscience major at Smith next year. Also, I work at the University of Texas at Dallas and we offer it as a major.

Thanks guys for the help. Most of the schools that seems your naming for me are reaches, aka Harvard, Stanford, Caltech,Brown, JHU... do you guys know of any matches/safeties with neuroscience as a major to round out my list? I would prefer California since i live there, but it really doesn't matter

Quick run down of my stats:
3.99uw 4.3w
5/615
2070
670 Bio M, 740 2c
good ECs.

amherst has the oldest neuroscience major...supposed to be pretty strong

Like I said earlier, most colleges and universities do offer neuroscience now. Check the university that you are considering and see if it does offer it. The University of Texas at Dallas would not be a reach, and it's affordable. Our Neuroscience faculty are some of the best and it is a well funded department.

Don't forget to ask yourself what sort of neuroscience you're interested in, too. If you're interested in molecular/cellular neuroscience, you might not want to pick a school which focuses on systems or cognitive neuroscience, or vice versa. The differences in methodology and subject matter can be quite large.

Reading a little about programs at each of the schools which interest you will help you to narrow down a list.

First, do you want to go to a big university (e.g. state school) or medium-sized or small college (e.g. LAC or top private school)

Off the top of my head here is a variety of schools with good neuroscience programs

pomona
BROWN :D (represent...)
tulane
JHU
Oregon
Tulane
MIT
Oberlin
Vassar
Duke

DON'T rule out schools with neuroscience options in their psyc and bio departments or create your own major options. Schools include

Yale
Stanford
Rice
Cornell

OR
similiar programs that may be equally rewarding such as

Penn's "biological baisis of behavior"
Tufts "biopsychology"
Swarthmore's "psychobiology"
Wash U's "pscyhology-neuroscience-philosophy" (can also create your own major)

p.s. I have found princeton review to be frequently inaccurate. Your best bet, as to not rule out any schools, is to go to the website of a school you're interested in and scan ALL of their major options.

What are your other criteria?

I'll be at Tulane next year and they definitely have Neuroscience (it's my probable major).

Ballerina: I was a neuro major at tulane my frosh year. private message me!

Sorry guys I have responded. Ive been out of town. Some of my other criteria include good pre-med program, medium/larger schools, and I would also either like to major or minor in business.

Right now... the colleges I am thinking of are,
Harvard
Stanford
Duke
John Hopkins
Case Western-PPSP
USC-Bac/MD
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCSC

UCSD is supposed to have a really excellent neuroscience program (at least for grad students). I know Harvard and Stanford also have strong departments -- I'm applying there for neuroscience grad school.

Do you know if you're more interested in molecular/cellular neuroscience or cognitive neuro/psychology?

harvard doesn't have neuro...
