Never been hardworking or organized.

What a shameful title.

well. heres the thing: im not stupid. it just takes me sometime to do my homework. and i get freaked out and freak out about how im going to do my homework if i dont have enought time to physically do it all... so i have to take on this lax attitude.

UGH I DONT KNOW HOW TO BE HARDWORKING. i go to sleep for 8+ hours a night.. and im still sleepy in the morning. i can do assignments well under pressure for some reason, but not to the best of my ability. this has lead to some intense procrastination... doing hw on the bus or at 4 in the morning if its important. im guilty sometimes of skipping school because i didn't get all of the work done.

i don't know how ppl my age can physically get up at three in the morning, plan out a schedule, and get it all done. maybe its just because im not motivated... i dont know. but ive always been a procrastinator. and i procrastinate MORE when i have to do MORE.

ahhhhh this probably sounds stupid, and possibly horrifying to some of you CCers out there, but i am seriously out of control and i do not know what to do.

im missing school next saturday [intl student ;] and possibly sunday cause im attending a conference and i do not know how to cope with makeup work. its piles up... and i do not know how to plan in advance because i can barely get my homework done for the next day. i am also going to be missing a week of school after spring break, and my parents wont let me carry my text books because they are way too heavy and they want me to finish my work beforehand.

i lost my calculus book and have searched in every corner of the school. i lose things everyday [seriously. LOSE. everything. i lost my wallet FIVE TIMES THIS MONTH. lost my grammar book for two weeks.]

i can't turn homework in on time without forgetting to do an assignment for another class or not being able to get to it because i couldnt figure out how much time to spend on each assignment.

MY LIFE IS OUT OF CONTROL. PLEASE HELP ME.

^ Get yourself tested for ADD… Seriously, your post is classic ADD.

[Study Hacks Blog Archive The Danger of Deep Procrastination](The Danger of Deep Procrastination - Cal Newport)

I’ve been plugging this site a lot lately, but if I’d discovered it earlier, I think I could have avoided being as behind as I am this year. Likely, your problem goes deeper than something that can be fixed by little pieces of advice from CC-ers, but I’ll give it a crack:

-Get an agenda. Write absolutely everything in it. Everything.

-Get a montly calendar to write assignments down. Make the due date for assignments a day or two early than it actually is, then forget the actual due date. This is more managable than a daily to-do list that loses sight of the big picture.

-Force yourself to go to bed at a reasonable time (say, 10) every night. At first, you’ll probably keep procrastinating. Doesn’t matter if your work’s not done–go to bed. Eventually, you’ll realize that you don’t have the option of staying up late, and you’ll start getting your work done.

^ That last one is BRILLIANT

YankinLondon: i asked my parents to get me tested… but my parents arent taking me seriously and they dont think i have it. they think its a lethal combination of laziness, lack of motivation, and disorganization. so, i cant really check if i have it until i go to college in a couple of months i guess.

Glasses: have an agenda, but forget it at home too often.

havent tried the monthly agenda method. will try it and let you know.

im at the stage at ur third pt. just keep procrastinating. but im not getting anywhere, and things are getting worse.

thank u both for ur posts.

How do you get treated for ADD?

This is me except I do my work at normal hours, forget about other work and go to sleep really late…lol.

@glassesarechic: Thanks for the wonderful tips, especially the last one. I’m definitely gonna be trying that out.

Make a schedule far in advance and make it so that if you do not get something done on time according to your schedule, you still have plenty of time to do it. I’ll give you an example. When I did my college applications this year, I gave myself a deadline to get each one done at least three weeks before it was actually due. Sometimes I had to extend these self imposed deadlines. However, in the end all of my early applications were completed at least several days before the actual deadlines. I had ten applications, seven regular. I had only three left to submit twenty days before the earliest deadline, and the three I hadn’t submitted were going to be ready within two to three days (then I got in early decision so I got to withdraw the rest!). This system has worked incredibly well for me and I have gotten everything done.

Added benefit to going to bed early: You’re better prepared to focus during the day, eliminating the need for last-minute cramming because you’ve been paying attention in class. You can also get work done in class–I try and do homework the same day it’s assigned in later classes so I just have big assignments and moderate studying left for home.

thanks for the posts everyone. =]

ill try out the self-determined deadline thing…

glasses: ill try it… but i dont think itll work [for me]. ive been doing that for the last couple of days… but why not take a shot, i guess.

as for the add, i dont actually know how u get tested. but i think you get diagnosed by a psychologist. i took a quiz online and it said highly likely… but i think im going to try to solve this on my own.

The biggest issue is commitment. If you know you’ll just give yourself an out if you have too much work or can’t get it done on time, you won’t do it. Tough love!
