Thank you historymom and yabeyabe! Historymom, I got your PM and responded. Hope you got it as I’m not sure I did it right.

There is hope for B students! We pushed S all through high school but he was stayed in the 3.0 range year after year, although excelling in extra-curriculars. Then he narrowed his choices down for colleges to only three that he really likes, and we just didn’t know if he would get into any of them. It is a good day at our house! Hope to hear more good news from other parents of “average” kids.

congrats campbellmom, and hanging on to your words. St. Mary’s is sort of on the list; a deffinite, if not for the price. Son is getting frustrated as it looks like he will finish this semester with one A and three almost A’s in core subjects (more A’s would have placed him more securely in the 3.0 area…), and the PSAT went down in two areas, and was disappointingly (especially to him) “average” as well…The good news was, thanks to CC, I encouraged him to practice writing if nothing else, and writing went up 10 points. So he is planning to practice for the SAT.

S was accepted to his safety today, University of Hartford, the honors program, with a 14K Presidential scholarship (he’s had mediocre grades but good SAT’s & recommendations)

I am looking forward to taking a tour and getting more information. S still hopes he’ll get into his reaches, but I keep telling him they won’t be feasible financially. His other options are a couple of UMass schools he applied to, but I am kind of worried about what will happen next year when the stimulus money runs out.

Thanks to everyone for their advice & encouragement, and to Thumper1 for the U of Hartford suggestion.

Shrinkrap don’t lose hope. My S’s PSAT scores were not good but he had much better SAT scores. His PSAT scores were part of why we knew he had to prep for the SAT. He decided to only take the SAT once but his scores were within the range of Saint Mary’s middle 50% as well as Sonoma State, his other top choice.

Three almost A’s is fine isn’t it–now he knows he can get them to A’s next semester.

johnnydoe, I will PM you later. Thank you both.

Thank you campbellmom. His PSAT’s look fine for St.Marys and Sonoma. Sonoma is on his list too ( and cheaper! yeah!). He did a soccer ID camp at Chico this weekend too, and was pretty impressed…by the rec center… I also reminded him that last year this time he had 4 C’s.

I can finally say “My son is going to college”. He was accepted to York in PA and University of Scranton. He is thrilled! We thought he would be accepted at York but we were not sure about Scranton.

historymom and johnnydoe, I am having trouble PMing this morning. I sent you both responses and they seem to have disappeared into cyberspace. I get an error message after hitting the send button.

johnnydoe, I can write you briefly what I wrote in length in the PM. S is 3.0 UW/3.1W, SAT scores 500/540/560 taken only once (his decision not to retake.) Strong extracurricular activities, sports, clubs, leadership positions in both, etc. An unusual essay and LOR from teacher/club advisor that is a Santa Clara Univ alumna.

He has applied to Sonoma State Univ, San Jose State Univ (safety but not top choice) and will apply to Santa Clara Univ regular decision. SCU is a reach as his stats are not in their average range, although his other parts of the application may help him.

Your D’s profile seems very strong for Saint Mary’s and USF. Kudos to her for the great improvement.

Congrats MaryAnn on your S’s acceptance to both schools!

Congrats to all with the great news regarding acceptances. My son was deferred from his very first college notification Haven’t told him yet and since he hasn’t asked, I’m hoping maybe some good news will come in the meantime.
Some of you have mentioned Clark, Assumption, and Roger Williams. My son has applied to all of those colleges. All seem great. He was just contacted for a Clark interview today.
Good luck to everyone…
CCL

CapecodLady8 - I would do the same thing - hold the deferral until some good news hits. My son also applied to Roger Williams (regular decision), so we will not hear until Feb. We visited in October and we were both impressed.

Mary Ann - congrats!! It’s a good feeling to know that your child is going to college.

My son applied to a school that has a non binding ED. It is one of his top choices. We’ve been waiting to hear because his original visit was during the summer. The great news is that he got in!!! (I really thought that he would be deferred or denied) So we’re psyched.

The issue is that he really needs to revisit while the kids are there. This is a problem because this school starts up again on 1/11 and my son has midterms on 1/14 and 1/15. So he either misses the midterm review days or doesn’t revisit!!! What would you do???

Congratulations to those with news of admissions–it’s such an exciting time and the BEST to know your child has a yes!

Also, thank you to those who responded to my engineering inquiry. Bucknell is on D’s list although it could be a reach. I’m unfamiliar with Lafayette but will check it out. Not sure why but D doesn’t want to pursue U of Denver…she has a distant cousin who’s had a challenge settling in there so, somehow, she’s developed a negative view of it although it’s based on so little.

We’re in California and will be visiting east coast schools over Feb break. The current list (made before the Engineering possibility arose) includes:

Elon
American
GWU
Lehigh
Villanova
Drexel
Northeastern
BC

We would have loved to see Bucknell but can’t quite fit it in. I think this list makes sense but if anyone has any thoughts/suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

collage1: My S loved Drexel, we visited in Aug; He would go if were accepted, but we’d need a good chunk of merit aid to afford it, I don’t see that happening.

Also, Northeastern, based on our school’s Naviance, it is a reach for him.

A colleague’s S is a freshman at Bucknell & loves it, but sounds like there is a lot of excessive drinking going on in him dorm. Not sure how normal this is.

To All, thank you for your input from my posts and for the welcome -

To CapeCod - We too are looking at Clark, received a post card listing there would be an interview, but no real contact as to when that will be. As for RW, received email today that all the app stuff is in place…we have to wait till next year for word.

*As for CCSU he was accepted With Housing! Yahoo - has somewhere to go!

He is anxious over the others.

I started and have stopped looking at Assumption…for now. I was all fired up, but I was deterred by something I read on student reviews - that many of the core courses they have to take in the first 2 years are somewhat in a religious nature and not always transferable to many colleges.

I think Catholic schools are doing something right - the students who transfer to public high school def. have an advantage, but core credits need to be transferable. And it’s also about the fitting in factor - do you know what I mean? Still part of me says, it would benefit him to attend a Catholic school. arghh

Remember at Christmas:
Considering what they are carrying, I think mailmen are under-rated.

In retrospect to my post, I guess some Clark courses could be put in the same regard as Assumptions - and who know if your S/D decides to move on, what could be transferable?

Sorry if I am just talking out loud.

Warrior - why CCSU? Do you have personal experience? Would appreciate any feedback - he’s undeclared, bright but not honor roll, and they seem to be offering alot of majors he could explore… thx

Martina, congrats on the big $!
Maryann, congrats–a friend did very well at York and a CCer, kitty56, loves Scranton’s impact on her 2 kids!
Capecod, hang in there–good news will come!

Warrior, congrats! Why not visit after 1/15? And what is the difference between nonbinding ED and EA?
Collage, Lafayette is close to Lehigh and the 2 schools are arch rivals
Peps, my guess is Clark courses would be more transferable, because it has a bigger name

Collage, you can pm me if you have Lafayette questions. S is a junior there (not an engineer, though). DH & I are alum. Lafayette’s website is pretty thorough as well.

yabeyabe2 - The difference between EA and nonbinding ED is that you have to make a committment by 1/15. That’s the reason we have to visit. We’ll have to see what happens with the $$$ and then we’ll decide what to do.

As far as CCSU, I went there and many people I know have gone there. The school has spent a lot of money to update and remodel. Young graduates that I know are all employed and successful.
