New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

peacelove - check out Carroll College in Helena Montana. Their websites brags about how many students get accepted to med school. With your GPA, I think they would give you $8000 in merit aid. There is another college in Colorado Springs, but I can’t think of its name right now.

Kajon, you’re probably thinking of Colorado College. It’s reachy for peacelove I think. And yes, I forgot Carroll College. I don’t know why I keep forgetting that one…

I visited colorado college and props to those who can spend all 4 years soley focused on school and nothing else but school, who can just be with school 24/7. I need a balanced like. It’s a great school academicaly wise but not socialy wise. since its a 3 1/2 week block program schedule your working constintly including weekends, which isnt my thing but yes its a great school so if thats your kinda school check it out.
espically if your in a science major your classes are like 8-12 with labs 1-4 homework 5-8 study 8-12, thats a little too much for me.

I checked out carrol college not my school, im not going to a religon based school, great suggestion though. I am now applying to u of montana.

I have a 3.3 average (it may have gone up to 3.4 though) and a 29 ACT. Because of my disability, the list of schools that I could get into is much longer than the list of schools I could concievably attend. For instance, I can’t go to a big, urban school like my state flagship. I mean, I can’t can’t. Without small classes and support I would flunk out.

My solution has been to apply to twelve schools that fit my narrow criteria and hope that two or three come through with acceptance and money. So far, I have been accepted to one, and it gives me heart (especially since the one I was accepted to was highly selective).

PeaceLove, I do not know the Western schools well, but UMass, UNH and URI may be within reach and the MA and NH certainly have cold weather. UMass also has traditionally had a PeaceLove & Music vibe. URI is near the beach.

Having watched Boise State play football, they are on my mind, too.

Miss Pickwickwickian, congrats and good luck to you both.

Both of my daughters seriously considered Carroll College, applied were offered good merit but chose somewhere else. I adore that school but traveling to and from seemed to be too daunting for my girls.

They have a merit aid calculator on their web site which will give you an idea of what it may cost you and the campus is homey, close knit and beautiful. Helena is big enough but small enough and it is cold for sure check this out [Carroll College - Carroll College Webcam](http://www.carroll.edu/about/webcam/) right now it is 3 below.

I also wanted to encourage you to check out Adams State College in Colorado. I don’t know much about it but when I was doing research for my DDs I came across it. [Welcome to Adams State College](http://www.adams.edu/) Your GPA is in range if recall.

Hi folks,
Well we have been hunkering down, both with the cold and the grades. Letting S do whatever he can do, on his own, and I try to let him be. It is not easy…

He let us know last night that money is on his mind (not sure what brought that up) and with being undecided he wants to do the cheap route. And he’s good with his acceptances. And thank goodness we are in this position with acceptances, as someone pointed out, not all kids can get into college.

We let him know that we are there, and that the cheap route is not always the right one. And we know that he’s got to do something to improve his grades, but that was unspoken…
Well, I love hearing all the news, congrats and thoughts to all
peps

quick question, i’m rethinking a decision I made last year. I sent my acts to university of colorado ( a reach because of my test score), but should i send in my sats. I had an 18 act and 860 sat. Should I send my sat out or leave it alone? I’m ok with being denied.

I don’t know if a 860/2400 would help anyones application. In your position I would refrain from sending it.

out of a 1600

peacelovemusic did you see my post #2286 above…I neglected to address it to you personally. [Carroll College - A private, Catholic, liberal arts & professional college](http://www.carroll.edu)

Knowing how informative, positive and supportive this thread is I couldn’t stand to see it on page 3 :D

Aaargh!!! Just discovered our first big screw-up of the application process. For some reason I never noticed, on Goucher’s scholarship page, that their arts scholarships had a separate application, unlike their academic merit scholarships. Just saw it now. And of course, the deadline has passed. Potentially $5-$7.5K left to rot on the vine. $#@%!

nightchef I am sorry, that’s a bitter pill for sure. When decision time comes you will perhaps experience it again if your kid decides to forgo an awesome package at one school for a decent but not so sparkly one at another. I know I did.

I’m a 3.3 gpa student and proud of it!! Love this thread. Althought I go to a highschool with 4500 students in it I think 3.3 isn’t bad, not bad at all.

We had a nice fat envelope from S’s match school - where he’d end up going if accepted and he’s not accepted at the flagship school. They have rolling admissions, and I have been checking the mail for something from them.

I very excitedly brought the envelope to S, we opened it, and…it contained an update of a handout that they had given out at the open house. Anti-climatic, to say the least.

Martina Boooooooooooo on sending fat envelopes at this time of the year when they DON’T contain the goods!

kashc2 Good for you! We are all quite amazed and proud of our own 3.3ish students!

That is a tough break, nightchef, just wait until your S picks the most expensive school and ignores the other outstanding packages! That is typical! LOL… I hear that over and over again in our school district.

Sure, you have “to be in it to win it”, but my older son applied to several of these extra application type of scholarships and he never saw any money from them. My younger son has applied to two of them, and so far there is no success there either.

My boys were told that we MUST compare packages!
