New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

martina99 - what a break! That kind of mailing should be banned!!! Hopefully, there will be another fat envelope soon.

kashc2- I agree, 3.3 is not that bad, in fact in many schools, reflects a great deal of hard work and commitment to your academics. I am quite proud of my 3.2 son!

Well, he can pick whatever he wants, but if the difference is more than a few thousand dollars then that will be decisive, and he understands this. Even in the best-case scenario, we will be spending more than we can really afford and probably taking on more debt, so finances are going to play a large role in the decision–which makes this goof all the more annoying. (I’m still trying to figure out how I thought the college was going to evaluate people for a music scholarship based on the information in the Common App…d’oh!)

I’m consoling myself with the thought that at Goucher he at least has a decent shot at some academic merit money, and maybe he would not have gotten both in any case. Also, one of the music scholarships is available to continuing students, so he can always apply for it next year if that’s where he ends up.

Pkrishnan, I think your son will be accepted at all of those schools. Good luck!

Kashc2–very good options await you.

Martina–you are so right! I find that often schools seem to use mailing lists without cross-checking to see if the kids have actually already visited, applied, etc. No wonder tuition is so high!

Speaking of mailings, we are in this lull between EA and RD and I’m pondering the responses so far. Some schools have sent everything we need to know to make a decision today. Some have sent chatty congratulatory stuff and holiday greetings. One school sent a simple letter of acceptance but nothing else. No brochure, no merit aid, no housing info, nada. All we have from them are a couple of SMALL fliers acquired at a fair. The saving grace is that they sent a persuasive rep to my daughter’s school. What to think? Does it matter? Do I need a new hobby?

We have a mix here too of schools who have sent a lot of stuff versus ones that have just sent the acceptance and that’s it. I seem to be the only one who notices though; my son hasn’t opened up any of the mail from them! I guess this will not be an influencing factor…

One school has e-mailed him at least once a week asking him for a decision. I guess they may be trying to make room to accept others? I just find it odd that every week they ask…providing a link to click on for “yes”, “no” or “don’t know” each time.

RTR, interesting. I suppose that school wants a “realtime” count of who knows their plans and who doesn’t.

How about the website at this school I mentioned that still has links to calendar events from the fall? An out-of-date site bugs me.

We ran into this recently with one college where we had scheduled an interview at the admissions office over Christmas break (we scheduled it back in November). Two days before the interview, we got a postcard in the mail inviting us to schedule an alumni interview. We didn’t know what to think. We had to call to verify that the admissions interview was still on the schedule and that it would render the alumni interview moot.

I think we may sometimes have a tendency to overestimate the efficiency and technological prowess of admissions offices, especially at smaller schools.

Another interesting thing: My son used his regular e-mail address when he took the SATs, but started a new address for his college applications. However, even though he did not use the regular address again, he often gets application-based mail sent to the original e-mail address. For instance, the school I mentioned above who is asking every week for a decision, is sending the e-mail to his original address even though we cannot figure out how they would have gotten it. (Well, I guess they got it through targeted SAT score searching…but how did it become linked with his current application?)

R2R, we have one that is asking for a refundable deposit at this time. If it is refundable with a note stating that he has changed his mind, so could someone tell me what the point of it is? He applied there as a rolling decision applicant (or whatever they’d like to call it, but it was NOT early decision). My son could be awarded more merit aid there (he was awarded some already), but he has an app out at this school for more. Also, we don’t have a FA package yet. We cannot say “yes” to a school without that information.

Interesting, a school S applied to on the Common App is now extending its deadline. Hmm, maybe not enough regular decision applicants? Thought that last admissions cycle there was an article in the New York Times about that.

hey if anyone is looking for schools in the northeast, check out curry college. A college I haven’t seen mentioned here

OMG…where is our thread? :-)

I don’t have any news…we are patiently waiting for the last handful of schools to release decisions. The longest wait between submission and notification (so far) has been Penn State…S applied around October and it’s supposed to be “rolling” but we haven’t heard a thing yet and I understand that many others haven’t as well. In fact, no one from our school has heard, and about twenty kids applied there.

I’m still wondering if there’s any schools he missed (I wanted him to apply to Syracuse and he wouldn’t), but he has no worries at all. How nice for him…lol!

RTR: a little surprised about nobody hearing from Penn State; I think they started sending out to kids who were placed in alternate campuses (not Happy Valley)…

Do they have a counselor specifically for your state? (didn’t want to say which state without your permission)…maybe someone else on CC can reflect if that state has heard anything yet…

Son also has not heard from Penn State (we’re in Pennsylvania). Applied in late September. ACT 29, 3.1UW, 3.5W, so guessing he’s on the fence.

Frugola, I don’t know if it’s just kids on the fence who haven’t heard. I mean, twenty kids in our schools can’t all be on the fence. If you look at the Penn State threads on CC, it does look like a lot of highly qualified kids haven’t heard yet.

Rodney…good point. I would imagine that, since we are out of state, all kids are applying to the main campus so other notifications wouldn’t affect us. I can’t imagine that no one in our whole state has heard though, although I guess it’s a possibility. I feel like, given the size of the school, it’s all done by a computer, and not by an actual person.

I guess we were a little spoiled by all of the early responses from rolling schools…we’re getting impatient for the last 5-6 to come in! Still have to send 7th semester grades to 3 schools, one of which (University of Oregon) is high on son’s list. Planning visits to a few schools in February. So far 6 acceptances, 2 denies - so things have gone well.

All Regular Decision here, so nothing is new! I did the FAFSA & CSS Profile with estimates. A couple schools wanted tax info from 2008, so sent that along!

I will have to brush up on the steaming the envelope over the tea kettle, opening it, reading it & then sealing back up with a glue stick. Then very innocently putting it on the recepient’s messed up bed, that is never made! Then one must practice an emotionless face when child gets home from school and you say “There’s an envelope from College X on your bed.”

I am cracking up about this, because I thought I was the only one who did this.

I thought these days all mystery was gone due to the thin envelope/fat envelope thing. No?

Thin envelopes can contain good news too. I happened with my DDs last year.

Oh and there is apparently a freezing and resealing the envelope trick too ;)

elizabeth has your S heard from Arizona? (sorry don’t remember if it was State or U of A) Congrats on the good news and I hope the bad news has been taken with a grain of salt.

DS and his best friend want to do a college road trip that will include NAU. They are actually excited by the idea.
