New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

WhoooHOooo to PegV’s D! Congrats Alabama is a wonderful school!

PegV, Roll Tide Roll!
Historymom, I have the impression that most of the students discussed in this group are boys, especially those viewed as underachieving.
And the clear majority of parents posting are women, perhaps in part because of the stereotypical reluctance of men to express feelings and to seek outside advice (such as driving directions  )

Historymom: daughter is a junior…didn’t realize she was in the minority on here…

My son got his Arizona State U “congratulations, you’re in” notice on his ASU page today…another victory for a 2.9 kid! Its his top choice so he’s thrilled.

Hoping my dd will be joining your son with an acceptance there.

Congratulations Elizabeth! And perhaps soon you and Peg can point your kids to the other’s Facebook pages–you never know…what better common ground fo rkids than laughing about their parents’ CC addiction?

sorry if I should already know this but how do you all already have acceptances?

Isn’t it a bit early. Thanks. I am a newbie!

No problem. Some schools start seeing out decisions much earlier than others–as early as August/September. My recollection of decisions being delivered all at once in April was as outdated as milk being delivered to your door. Don’t worry–soon you will be rattling off Early Action, Early Decision I and II, Early Read, Rolling Admission and all the other buzzwords.

Hi uv - Arizona State like many schools has rolling admissions - my son applied in early September, and after sending his test scores about a month ago it took just a few weeks for him to get admitted. Many schools do this, especially the big state schools. You can check on the school’s websites for information, and can also check admission status on those same websites. Much better than waiting for snail mail!

elizabethh Yay three cheers and Huzzah! Is he 2 for 2 right now?

uvtw9: Rolling admissions schools and early action schools generally have a 2 to 4 week turn around between submission of apps and acceptance notification. For our kids, who are generally less competitive than kids with higher gpas, applying early is both a way to increase the chances of acceptance and a way to ease the stress of not knowing if our kids will have a place to go in the fall.

vutw9, ditto on rolling admissions points made above. Both schools we’ve heard from were rolling admissions, and we too wanted the edge of applying early.

And just so you don’t worry, it’s STILL early for plenty of schools. We were at a reception for Hartwick last night, and the guy made it clear that it’s still very early in the season for them.

Yes, my (now college soph) S applied to his state u. at the end of Sept. and got his acceptance the first week of Nov. His gpa was prob. 3.3w thanks to four yrs of A’s in PE  but SAT was low…less than 1000. I think applying so early coupled with taking two dual enrollment classes, working a year 'round p/t job and playing four yrs. of football boosted his bottom line. His sch. is also 60/40 highly female so being a guy fr. a less represented part of the state might have helped too.

Congrats, congrats, congrats to yabeyabe, elizabeth and all the exciting acceptances on here!!
This is my favorite thread, filled with wonderful people and helpful posts. Exciting to hear good news. For those of us who still have juniors, it’s nice to know that the future might well work out happily.

I agree this is a wonderful thread - a place for us parents of average - in gpa only of course! - kids to commiserate. Historymom, yes he is 2 for 2. He said he’d never seen me jump so high as when we saw that “congratulations” on the computer screen :)

Hi rodney: I don’t know that your D is a minority here. I was just curious because it seemed like the parents of boys outnumber those of girls on this particular thread.

elizabethh: congrats to you and yours!!..

So good to hear about everyone’s acceptances! I am really going to encourage my son to apply early next year so he will be in this pressure-free zone by this time. Of course, the stress does come back in the Spring if you have more then one favorite.

Math is my DS’s Waterloo. He is repeating Algebra after a ghastly experience last (8th grade) year. I hoped that this would be confidence building year for him in the math department. I just wanted to share here that he got his first B on a math test since 7th grade!

hIstorymom, congrats!
So much depends on the teacher in math, because you either learn the methods or you don’t. Would your son be willing to meet with the teacher periodically before or after school to make sure he “gets it”? That can make a huge difference.

Thanks yabeyabe he has been meeting with his Alg teacher in the mornings and I am sure that has been what has helped the most :)
