I think this may be a silly bunch of questions but no place like here to ask them.

My S will not take Alg 2 until his Jr. year. What is the Math on the SAT and ACT? Will it be a waste of time for him to take it for the first time in Jan of his Jr year? He will take whichever he does best on more than once and it would be great to be done with testing B4 Sr year. It that not realistic?

FWIW I asked my D these questions and their answers were oblique and not really at all helpful. She said something like “Mom that was like a year and a half ago, I don’t know but I think it was the kind with numbers.”

historymom, I was told by an SAT math tutor that most of the math on the SAT is algebra and a bit of geometry. I think you may be able to find the true percentage on the College Board website.

It is also my understand that the ACT has more higher level math questions, which is why some recommend the ACT for stronger math students.

historymom: my daughter is now a junior in alg2; she was advised to take the SAT/ACT in March/April at the earliest…and yes, ACT is apparently higher level, but from what I have been advised, less tricky and more like what has been learned in school…

Your D btw sounds like my older daughter; doesn’t remember a thing about anything academic from HS when we ask her…

historymom: my daughter took Alg 2 as a sophomore (final grade=C) and as a junior (final grade=C+). She sat for the SAT practically the moment junior year ended and the ACT a week later. Her math scores were 590 and 23, respectively. She was worried about taking the test again down the road when the math (the kind with numbers, ha!) wasn’t fresh in her brain so didn’t retake either.

She is currently sporting a B in Pre-Calc. Progress!

I hate when I have to look for pages to find this thread. My ds has been admitted to 5 schools so far. I’ll post the final results when we get them all in, but the pressure is definitely off.

Same here ^^ S got into all but one of his rolling admission schools so far and that one got delayed because they misplaced the transcript but he had mostly mentally scratched that school after a visit. Now the “big wait” until spring for the regular decision schools including the “big reach.” All is good as one of the rolling schools is a favorite. It will be vicarious fun though to read the boards starting mid-December to see what’s happening with the ED and then the EA kids. And yes, there are just a couple trig questions on the ACT. My S2 chose not to accelerate his math (he did not take HS Algebra in middle school) and did just fine on the ACT math section. According to the kids, it’s mostly Algebra and Geometry.

Truman State in Missouri has been mentioned once or twice. It is a WONDERFUL school of very bright kids. It has been described, very accurately in my opinion, as a public LAC. About 5500 undergraduates total, so class sizes are small in most cases. And it is highly affordable, even for OOS. Plus they calculate scholarship money on both GPA and test scores, so the child with the 3.2 but high SAT’s/ACT can still get something. But even with no scholarship it is not expensive by today’s standards. It is in a very rural part of Missouri, the part that is more like Iowa. In fact it is closer to Des Moines than St. Louis or KC, but still 2 hours. But a lot of the kids say that makes it more like the “old-fashioned” college experience with almost everything campus focused and the bonds between the kids get really tight.

Oh, and being from St. Louis for 18 years growing up and another 6 working after college, I know people in many companies there. Uniformly they tell me that Truman grads are extremely favorably looked upon. They like Wash U grads too, but they describe Truman grads as more immediately effective. Interesting.

Yes, they will all go! S is my 4th and last one, so we are pretty laid back about it. I am going to do the CSS Profile today & get that off my “list” of things to do!

The trouble isn’t getting them into good schools, the trouble is paying for it! LOL

Hey, that is my mantra. Honestly, if students are applying to mostly a mix of matches and safeties they should have several “yes” decisions in hand from admissions by early spring. The big question is if the schools offer enough money to make themselves accessible to families that are not wealthy, or if they become an admit/deny situation.

NEmom we had that last spring. D was denied after being WLed I am sure the fact that she had need was a factor but maybe that’s just because I think anyone who wouldn’t want her for any other reason is crazy It was her reachiest campus and her #1 but now at her #2 she is thriving socially and academically and is really quite happy to be where she is.

Tiny brag: DS has pulled his Alg grade up to a B :). We made a deal that he needed to pull three other grades up in order to get an XBox for Christmas. Algebra wasn’t included in that list but whudduhyuhknow! He did it. He also pulled up one of the listed grades and has another week and a half to get er done. :)

historymom, you must be so proud of them!!!

My older son applied to 14 schools and he had 2 rejections, and 2 WLs. He had 10 acceptances. He had 5 schools out of the ten that we could even begin to consider because of finances. The other 5 flew off the table as soon as we saw the bottom line!! Our younger son has 6 or 7 accepances now, and no WLs or rejections yet. Historymom, I am going to send a PM to you too.

DS got his second decision, second acceptance today! He’s now been accepted to the University of Pittsburgh and Illinois Institute of Technology. IIT even gave him pretty generous merit aid–wonderful surprise!
