I noticed how it says Spring 2008 applicants have to use different essay topics (which look similar if not identical to the topics used before?).

"To be complete, your application must include at least two essays. Most students should submit personal essays A and B." - To clarify...as long as I'm not applying for honors, and a major that requires specific ones...I don't have to write BOTH A and B - maybe like A and F.

I fall under Fall 2008 Applicant (so does that mean I would use the Spring 2008 essay topics?), I'm going to major in Nursing and I'm in top 10% (however, admission to pre-nursing program is just as the Business program - accepting top 10% people for 75% of the spots available starting with top 1%).

In other words - what exactly are my essay topics? the Spring 2008 ones? that UT page was updated July 3, 2007 so I'm a bit confused as to why they had different ones listed. Also would it hinder me to not do the usual A and B essays (unless it is really required to do both)? Personally I would just hate doing that potential classmate essay - as I'm sure many of you agree.

I don't think you can apply yet for fall 2008, or can you? Tried to and it says starting in September-so has anyone been able to start their application yet?

I am so glad you posted about the new essays. My son has been working on essays based on the old topics. He didn't know the ones online were the ones from last year. These topics look much better to me than last year's did, so I think he'll be glad.

I really wish I hadn't clicked on this topic. The potential friend topic was one of the worst essay prompts I've ever dealt with. Managed to get a decent essay out of it still, but could have saved me a lot of banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do it in a way that wouldn't be done by 99% of everyone else.

Awwww....sorry about your head. :) I just had to let you know that my S and I agree. That had to be the stupidest prompt ever. What were they even hoping to find out about the applicants from that?? Nobody is going to write, "I hope to find lots of people just like myself so I can hang out with only them," even if that's exactly what they will do!

Most college applications give you specific instruction on the essay, namely the length an essay has to be. However, I don't see this written on the web site. Does anyone know how many words the essay has to be?

I think the "unwritten rule" is that the essay should not be longer than one page. Many people still get admitted if there is a word limit and they don't exceed it by an excessive amount, i.e. 500 word limit and your paper is over 1,000. But if the limit is 500 and you end up with 600 or 650, as long as your essay is well written and doesn't bore the person reading it, you should be fine.

One page is a good limit to have for yourself. You should be able to write a good essay at that length. The two essays I wrote for my application to UT were both between 550 and 600 words. I haven't received a decision yet but I'm not worried about the essays.

Meh everyone ends up writing pretty much the same essay for the potential class mate, so its no big deal looking back. Though one of my weird friends wrote about her potential classmate which ended up being her dormant much more outgoing split personality..haha
