New College and Forum Curriculums -- Thoughts and Reviews?

If anyone who has taken either the New College or Forum Curriculum would like to share their experience, I’d like to hear it and share it with my sons. They will be undecided first years in the College of Arts & Sciences next year, possibly leaning towards business or government / public policy. Thanks!

I don’t know too much about the new curriculum but if they are leaning toward business, makes sure they review all the pre-requisites required to apply in their second year. Also make sure you send any AP scores over as some of those may be used for requirements. Helpful to have them sent before registration. Good Luck!

Thanks, Collegehelp! Happily, I can say “done” and “done.” Right now, my kids are really just trying to ascertain whether other UVA students have enjoyed their experiences in the New College and Forum Curriculums (or Curricula, depending on your druthers). I fear I’m old enough that “traditional” was my only choice…

this may have been the first year. Have you asked on the UVA Parent Network page on FB. That group has a wealth of info.

I was in the New College Curriculum this past year, and I can say that as a premed student, the New College classes I took exposed me to subject material I hardly would have experienced otherwise. They weren’t particularly difficult classes, and most of them were discussion-based; to me, they served as a nice break on really interesting material like national politics, foreign affairs, anthropogenic extinction, etc. from my lecture classes in chemistry, biology, and calculus. I would highly recommend it, but I don’t know how the New College Curriculum classes would fit in with a pre-comm or pre-batten schedule.

My daughter was in the New College Curriculum first semester and switched into the traditional Arts and Sciences. Unlike @seaotter17 (who took math and science courses), she will be a history or media studies major. She didn’t particularly like it as it was not really much different than other courses she was taking. She preferred taking a full semester class rather than 2 half semester courses.
