Just noticed that they are creating a New School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Mgmt. The website has very little info other than this announcement. Anyone know more about this? Is this a good thing?

"As many current students are aware, the Departments of Hospitality and Tourism Management and Sport and Recreation Management were merged to create the new School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management.

Although each Department has its own successful and prestigious history at JMU, this powerful new alliance will allow faculty to provide an even greater educational, personal and professional experience for its students. The creation of this new community within JMU reflects the University’s dedication to a constant evaluation of itself and a willingness to implement those innovative changes which promote its proud tradition as a proactive, student-centered institution of higher education. In a world which is changing ever faster, JMU embodies the concept of Being the Change, and our new School represents that type of Change."

Well - sports mgmt is a major that seems to bounce around a lot - not just at JMU. Some universities have it in the Dept. of Education, some have it under Kinesiology, etc. IMO - it belongs with the Business School - but you rarely see if there. So - my question was more along the lines of does it fil well with tourism and hospitality? Will this newly merged dept. have it’s own bldg? How is this change perceived on campus - are students who are already in these majors happy with the reorganization or were there mixed feelings after the announcement?

I believe that the school will have it’s primary home in a newly renovated wing of Godwin Hall in the center of campus by the bookstore and football stadium.

I have to admit that I live a little bit in an “arts bubble” in the new performing arts center on the bluestone part of campus. This was not a topic of conversation amongst our students, so (unfortunately) I don’t have much of a take on the student perspective. I will try to think if I have had any students in classes who are in any of those majors. If so, I will see what the buzz was within the programs.

The dance program used to be housed in that segment of Godwin Hall (prior to moving out into the arts center in May). I do remember talk that there was excitement that Hospitality and Tourism Management would have a new home.

Just thought I would bump this up and see if there is any new info. Is anyone in this new School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Mgmt? How’s it going? Any comments?

I am looking for info on the hospitality major at JMU. How are the professors and career advisors? Internship opportunities? Job placement? Anyone? Thanks.
