I have the lofty ambition of wanting to go to graduate school at an ivy league or russell group school or the equivalent (i.e. Stanford, University of Chicago, etc.). Which one of these schools will be better for doing that? I will be studying English literature, but will want to go to graduate school to study either film or English literature. This hypothetical situation, of course, assumes that I will do very well at the school I choose.

thanks for the help

Nobody knows?

From what I’ve heard, New College prepares you more for graduate school, especially in lit. But you should know that you won’t have a GPA at New College (I’ve never really understood this) so, at least I would think, the other parts of your application are going to need to be that much better, though the thesis you construct your 4 years there will probably go a long way.

Yeah, I’ve heard that New College prepares you more for grad. school. Search for some New College threads; I remember some really long ones that debated about FL. schools. Generally, I hear that either you will love New College or absolutely hate it.

I’d heard that a little bit too, but didn’t know whether to believe it or not. Thanks for the help.

You should look into internship opportunities in Gainesville and Sarasota. I’m not sure what a Lit major interns in but you should.

Haha, I’m not sure either. I will be visiting both places soon though, so I will be sure to ask them all of these questions.

My main concern about New College is that it is so small that dating opportunities may be lacking. You will probably know everyone after a month.

My cousin went to New College, and went on to grad school at Brown, and is now a research fellow at Harvard. I think if you are intellectual and open to all sorts of alternative people and ways of thinking, it’s a fantastic school.

I would probably say UF. I live in Sarasota. I have never actually been to New College, just driven by, but around here is kind of known as the weird hippie college. Not saying it is bad, I know its a good school. It also depends on what your looking for. UF is huge and NC is really small. New College is also on the verge of being in a bad neighborhood. Ringling College is really close and it actually sits in a really bad area, New College is just down the street. Sarasota on the bright side has beautiful beaches and there is a cute little downtown area. Honestly, I can’t wait to get out of here so I might be biased, but definitely UF.

I’ve heard stories like that online Lennon and it gives me hope; that is definitely my dream in life.

Floridadad: I’m worried about that as well. I’m not really one to worry so much about getting around, so to speak, but I feel like 800 students is like a big high school.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I really appreciate them.
