New computer question & dorm question

Does anyone have two computers in college? I already have a nice desktop, that works just fine, and was thinking about getting an ultra portable laptop. 12 to 14 inches would be ideal, so i can carry it around with me all day.

Would this be a waste of money?

An alternative would be buying a new BIG laptop (i.e 17 inches), leaving my desktop home with my siblings, and going to college with the new laptop. The problem is that my computer will not be portable. I will not have the freedom of taking it wherever. I don't plan to take notes on my laptop, but would enjoy the freedom of taking it around. Simmilarly, i dont plan to be in my Dorm room a-lot. They are tiny and there is no room to study, so i plan on studing in the library. So basically i will probably be in my room at night and to sleep.

How long do you actually hang out in your Dorm?
Does anyone bring their laptop everywhere with them?

no it won't be a waste of money. you will need it for class and for recording class lectures. i am still not sure what i will do with my desktop. i could take it with me and limit my downloading or i can leave it at home and rape my parents connection.

My D will leave her desktop at home, and will take a 12-14" laptop. A desktop is probably too cumbersome to try to move in/out over the course of college life, unless you live super close, in which case you could try the desktop for the first semester, and make a determination then.

I think laptops are ideal for college students.

if you have a 12 inch laptop would't writing long term papers be a pain in the @ss. thats why bringing two computers would be a good idea for me. i will be able to write my long term papers on mt desktop, while shleping my laptop around with me all day.

To be honest, I hate using my laptop as it is so large (17 in). Also to be honest most students hardly ever move the laptop away from the place they put it down on the desk. When people say yeah its great for when I take it places, they are in the grand minority. Many of the laptops that I see around only leave the room once, when they move home. To be honest, I like having a more powerful desktop around. The only benefit from a laptop is if you go to school far away it is much easier to pack a laptop up then a computer. I did manage to get my computer on the plane however, monitor and all. Doable but very hard.

Like Vinin said the 17inch laptops are monsters. I however do not think there too big to not be portable. I personally love my 17inch lappy. it has two things that smaller laptops dont have. a nice true high defenition screen (1920x1200 p60 native) and a 7800GTX graphics card. If your only going to be taking notes on it and not playing games buy a nice 14 or 15 inch laptop and you will be happy.

I have a 15.4 inch laptop. I don't really take it anywhere with me, because I don't really need to take it anywhere with me. That being said, it's still small enough to haul to the library or down to the study lounge in my dorm. It comes home with me anytime I go home for a weekend, and if I travel anywhere that has internet in the future, it will come with me then too

I actually do bring my laptop around with me a lot--I like not having to worry about where I stored my last papers/presentations and I like being able to have my word settings in french the way I like them for my french papers and dashboard set up the way I like it (on a mac.. little detail obviously, but still). I have a 14 inch laptop and I've used it for writing all of my college papers and I definitely don't find it too small. I'm sitting here using it right now, in fact. A lot of my friends use a 12 inch laptop as their primary computer and it honestly doesn't make that much of a difference. Plus, if you bring your laptop, you don't have to work in your room OR the computer labs--you can work in the quietest study area that you can find, which I think is always a lot easier and less distracting to work in. I personally only know one person who brought a desktop to school; most people only brought 12-15 inch laptops. I would recommend not getting a 17 inch laptop because it's just a bit too big to carry around which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a laptop in the first place, and at that point you might as well just save your money and only bring your desktop.

I actually have a laptop and a desktop already. Only thing is my desktop is not snazzy at all, but hey, it's adequate for the basics.
I think I'll use my desktop at "home" and laptop only on the go, that way I'd get more life out of the laptop.

You can consider having a laptop that will also act as a desktop. Laptop + port replicator + LCD screen + mouse and keyboard = laptop you carry around and turn into desktop in room by hooking it and those peripherals into a port replicator.

I had three computers in my dorm. Two laptops and one desktop. They fit fine as long as I brought my nightstand from home.

woah, why the need of two laptops though? isnt it kind of redundant?

One was my new iBook. The other my old iBook. Since I had so many files on the old one I just brought it up. The desktop was a Macintosh Classic, manufactured in 1990. Now that I'm home it joins four other Macintosh Classics in my basement.

I just have my desktop right now, but I would like a laptop in the future (trying to talk my mom into buying it for me for Christmas). I haven't really found the need for a laptop, though, I just want one. My desktop works fine (we bought it in 2004), and if I need to study or something in the library or elsewhere on campus, I just go to one of the dozens of computer labs around.

I was in my dorm all the time. I'd go back to nap between classes, I'd hang out there to watch tv at night, I'd eat there often, my friends would come over to watch movies, I'd write my papers on my computer, etc. You really do live out of the dorm.

Also, you should remember that laptops are much easier for people to steal than desktops as well, so if you do bring the laptop, get a lock.

About typing on a small laptop...

I'm still in HS and I have like 5 computers in my house but my favorite for typing reports is my dad's old (6 years!) small (12") laptop. With a smaller keyboard the the keys are nice and close together (I'm a small guy though) and i like it.

I have my 10" laptop(it might be 11, I'm not sure) and then my desktop with the 21" monitor. As for moving it... honestly it's just one more trip to the car or one more box on the plane. Having a big screen is completely worth it. I was set on doing the port replicator/ full keyboard/LCD monitor combo with my laptop but the tiny one that I got was a pain to do that with.

I ended up spending way too much money on computers but you live and learn... I was considering getting a big 17" laptop to compliment my 10" portable one but I felt like a desktop would be more reliable and easier to service if anything went wrong.

Hmm my bro uses desktop (he got a new one when he entered college) and apprantly where he goes to there are plenty of computers in the library so it doesn't even really matter.

What about the other question: typically how long do you spend in your room, not counting when you sleep?
