Whitman College, a four year residential college will open next fall for the Class of 2011. Many of you might find your new home here, so I thought the details in this Prince article might be of interest. (I?m finding myself somewhat envious.)

Princeton......Amazing.........

there are only places for 200 freshmen at whitman, let's hope we're the lucky ones lol

As would be so friggin happy to get in. That would just be an awesome perk.

i say the CC acceptees get first dibs on Whitman.

It is sprinkled with kitchenettes, laundry rooms and study rooms. It has walkways, courtyards and arches. It has a common room, a dining hall, a library and a theater. It has wireless.

18-inch-thick walls, Japanese trees, a pizza oven and a bridge.

Each room has its own temperature control for heating and air conditioning, should the University decide to run it.

Do all other colleges have all of these, ahem, luxuries?

To answer your question FreshElephant, yes and no.

Whitman is no doubt a very desirable place for most underclassmen on campus (incoming freshmen and rising sophomores). Unfortunately for us in the class of '10, pretty much only those from Butler and Mathey College have the right to draw in there, and the rest, Forbes, Wilson, and Rockefeller, must hope for the minute chance that there will be an opening.

What really makes Whitman stand out are the rooms and the fact that the dorms are new and very integrated into each other, giving it the old residential college feel (it has the look as well). 60% of the rooms are singles, which is pretty much unheard of anywhere else on campus, and there is an abundance of 2-room doubles as well as 3- and 5-room quads.

As for the other things, most res colleges have kitchenettes, laundry rooms, and study rooms. I'm certain each residential college has its own library + computer cluster too. All res colleges have wireless in the dorms. A dining hall goes without saying, although the quality of each residential college's food varies immensely. Forbes College's food is tough to beat. In addition, most residential colleges have music and arts related facilities. Wilson College has a Blackbox theater, various music practice rooms, and a ceramics studio. Rockefeller College also has a theater. As for walkways, courtyards, and arches, this is Princeton.

Now, as for the other 'luxuries', including internal temperature control with ceiling heating/cooling units, the pizza oven, and the bridge, which led many Princeton students to believe that Whitman would have a moat (we wished), are definitely unique to Whitman College.

So when you get your room assignments in June/July, good luck to you. You'll have a better chance of getting a Whitman room than me.

I revisited Princeton a couple weeks ago, and Whitman already looks beautiful!

i don't know about whitman for the incoming freshmen, actually. whitman has a lot of really nice rooms, but most of them are pretty mediocre. the quads, for example--with the exception of the five-room ones and a few three-room ones--are relatively small; mathey has larger quads, on average. in addition, the number of "special" rooms--that is, the 5-room quads, 2-room doubles--actually isn't that big. looking through the plans, i saw only 7 5-room quads, and a similar number of 2-room doubles. the problem for '11ers is that everyone else will get to room draw before them, and while zoning will certainly keep the other classes from taking ALL the desirable rooms, i get the feeling that the whitman rooms won't be quite as amazing as people are making it out to be.
i'm being overly critical, however. 20-30 sq. ft. of room is most definitely worth the amenities that whitman will have (cooling units, new laundry machines, clean bathrooms, good lighting, etc. etc.). whitman also has an amazing location--it's in the middle of campus--you should be able to visit any of your friends with a 5-minute walk or so.
i think tokyorevelation is playing up the differences between residential colleges too much, however. the food doesn't differ all too much between residential colleges, actually. forbes is best for sunday brunch by a noticeable difference, but other than that, they're pretty much all the same. butler and wilson are supposed to be worse than forbes, mathey, and rocky, but they're not really too different. really though, colleges are pretty comparable in terms of quality and resources. you should be fine wherever you're put.

Ok question...how difficult is it to get a single as a freshman? Or is it not possible at all?

Yeah, its unlikely that you will get a single as a freshman, but there is a chance.

As to the previous poster, I guess the food in the res colleges isn't all that different, but I am pretty sensitive to what I eat, so this is just my opinion. I found the food in Forbes and Rocky to some extent to be significantly better than the other colleges. I actually have stopped eating in Wilcox all together because I would rather eat in Frist or another dining hall.

does anyone know if whitman has elevators?

Whitman does have elevators. And yes, Whitman does have a moat under the bridge, but it is a dry moat.

i really dont want a single freshman year.....even if that means i dont get whitman

yay guess what? i just read in the star-ledger that by 2012, the class size will be 1700, compared to about 1200 now. that means that starting with the freshman class entering 2008 (that's my class), about 125 more people will be needed to fill each class. i wonder if the acceptance rate will increase.

The acceptance rate will rise, but more because of the fact they're getting rid of ED. Don't forget a record number of applicants are expected at Princeton next year so by no means will it be easy.

I really want Whitman btw XD
