Just thought I should start a thread for the brand-spanking-newest res. college out there!

Hey guys--I'm a junior in Whitman and I'm on the College Council, so I'd be glad to answer any questions : ) I was also in Forbes my first two years.

yay whitman!! lol i'm so excited for next year! voovi16- do you know anything about what is already in our dorm rooms in terms of furniture?

in whitman you get a bed (xl), a wardrobe, a dresser, a bookcase, and a desk. The furniture is all dark wood.

Voovi, how is the Forbes addition?

Correct, you will get those items listed above in your room. You will also have a whiteboard/chalkboard outside your room already installed, so no need to bring one of those. I can't tell you guys how sweet Whitman is going to be--I've been on the planning committee for the college for the past year, and we've been working so hard to make it really awesome, and the Master is absolutely spectacular, he has SO many great ideas in store.

As in all other colleges, the laundry in Whitman is free--no need to bring lots of quarters (yay!). The laundry in Whitman is spaced out, with small laundry rooms on every other floor. There are also kitchens and common rooms/study spaces on nearly every floor, as well as elevators. All the dorms are connected (so you can go down to brunch in your PJs, just like in Forbes), except for Fisher Hall. The dining hall is going to be absolutely amazing--they're bringing in like 5 star chefs from fancy hotels for us, and they put in like a real brick pizza oven and everything. There's also a octagonal special dining room off of the main dining hall, for special guests. Whitman also has a beautiful library, state-of-the-art theater, dance rooms, a bridge and a moat, a tower, and tons of other really cool stuff. Let me know if you have any more questions!

ivynut, the Forbes addition is generally considered the less appealing housing in Forbes (compared to the New Wing and Main Inn), but most freshman are there are so there's a lot of comraderie. The rooms are not too big, not too small, you have common bathrooms. You guys also have your own laundry room for that section of Forbes. Other than that, there's not too much to say.

Voovi, one more question. So the Forbes addition is connected to the main inn? meaning that you don't have to walk outside to get there?

Correct, there's a hallway kind of underground that connects the two, that also houses the Forbes office with all the administrators.

anyone else in North C???

wait . . . we get a moat??? i thought that was just a crazy rumor.

any South Baker kids out there, feel free to knock on the door of E211 as soon as you're settled to meet the coolest sophomores in your building!

booooooo chalkboards . . . whiteboards were so much easier. why chalkboards????

Like a lot of freshman put in Whitman, I was surprised to find out that I got a single. I had orginally asked for a quad. I'm really glad I'm in Whitman but I'm not sure about the single situation. But it looks like a lot of people in Whitman are in singles, and it seems to me that is has more singles than any other residential college (I think?). So, what exactly is the goal of having so many singles, and how do you think it'll work out? I feel pretty optimistic, but I've been wondering about this...

Way to advertise the quad, ptonkatz10! And I have no idea why chalkboards were installed either.. they look pretty classy when theyre new and clean, but really, theyre inconvenient and dirty...

But yes, we do get a moat (-like thing) I've seen it, though there was no water in it. Whitman is pretty darn cool. Our shield alone was designed by a very expensive company (which is kind of a little crazy).

Yes, right under the tower there is an archway, through which the bridge goes and then travels over the moat. The moat is a dry moat, and will just have trees and shrubs planted in it.

Also, the reason there are so many singles in Whitman is simply because that's what people want. It may seem like right now you'd want as many roomies as possible, but after getting one who snores, or smokes, or is nocturnal, etc., you gradually learn to appreciate the benefits of a single--with Whitman now including upperclassmen, and most juniors and seniors wanting either singles or singles within a suite, they're simply building what most Princetonians have expressed a desire for.

what's a moat?

btw, when do upperclassmen move in?

A moat is like what old medieval castles use to have--a big trench, probably 15 or 20 feet deep, dug around the perimeter of the building. In our case, it's only on the west side of Whitman though.

Upperclassmen move in on Sunday, September 9 (and anytime after that during the week that they feel like it), but there are always a fair number who move in early on the 6 or 7th because we have to be there to help with all the activities for you frosh!!

I'm an incoming freshman, and I was placed in a 3-room quad. Just wondering, what do students usually do for furniture in the common rooms? (I found out that they are unfurnished from the housing dept.)

Most people with something like that end up buying a small couch and maybe some comfy bowl seats, maybe a coffee table too. Of course, a TV too, and maybe a mini-fridge, it really depends on what you want. I'd recommend talking to your roomie beforehand, although I probably wouldn't buy any big furniture pieces until you actually get there and see the layout of the room--some rooms have weird doors or angled corners that can impact what you'd buy. Also, it's easier to talk and compromise in person and throw around decorating ideas (posters, etc.). And you'll have plenty of time during frosh orientation week to go out and get stuff, so don't worry at all about not being able to furnish your room once you get there.

In terms of where to find cheap stuff, rule #1 is never buy stuff at the U-store if you don't have to--they're always a rip-off. I don't know if you're coming with parents and a car, but there are plenty of malls, all within a 5-minute drive. Market Fair Mall has upscale home furnishing stores, a movie theatre and a Barnes & noble...most people don't go there too much. Nassau Park Mall has all the big stores--Wal-Mart, Target, Kohls, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc., where I'd imagine you'd probably want to hit for cheap furniture (as well as Linens N' Things, for sheets, fans, all that other dorm stuff--definitely bring a fan, because the first few weeks of school and the last weeks are extremely hot and you won't have AC). Mercer Mall is right across the street from Nassau Park Mall and has a Bed Bath and Beyond that might also be useful. And just down the road, there's Quakerbridge Mall, which is your typical suburban mall with Sears, Macys, Gap, American Eagle, etc. So yeah, for cheap furniture I'd say Wal-Mart and Target, maybe Linens N' Things.

awwww whitman doesn't have AC??
