I just visited UVA and saw that new dorms were being built. Are these freshman dorms? Are they getting rid of the "older" dorms? Sorry for the random questions, just curious. Thanks in advance!

First year dorms, and they’re replacing the…uh…“old” New Dorms…? I guess that’s what you would say There are Old Dorms and New Dorms. The New Dorms (located on Alderman) are being replaced to better reflect the rest of the school’s architecture and to better suit students needs. They look really, really awesome.

Old Dorms, on McCormick Rd, are there to stay.

Thanks ShoeBox! Dorm assignments are random, correct? No way to get yourself in the newest dorms?

Now, how would it be fair if a self selected group of students could get themselves into the newest dorms?
Interestingly, the old dorms used to be the most popular before the random assignment started.

The original plan was to replace the old 1st year dorms. Then, upon investigation, they realized that the old dorms built in the 1950s were in much better shape then the “new dorms” built in the 1970s. As a result, they have been replacing the new dorms in phases.
