Dorms for Engineering + General Questions

As an electrical engineering first-year student, not a Rodman scholar, what options for housing do I have? Personally, from what I read, I'd like to try to get Alderman housing, but is this possible, or are Old Dorms where I will be placed? I gather that Old Dorms are closer to engineering classes - true? Also, do all New Dorms have A/C, or just some parts? Thanks to anyone who can provide info. I did about an hour of searching threads, but wanted to ask a few specific questions here.

I cannot edit my post, but I now realize that housing is random. Does that leave an opportunity for New Dorms for an incoming first-year student, or do they generally get assigned to Old Dorms?

Also, are the residential colleges generally recommended to freshmen? Or even an option?

Dorms are assigned randomly to first years. You have about equal chance of getting new, old, or Hereford (and some Gooch/Dillard)… although they are in the process of tearing down some of the new dorms, so the chance might be against new dorms a little. Not all of new dorms have A/C, as a general rule, the hall style new dorms have A/C, and the suite style do not, all of Hereford has A/C. All of the dorms have their perks! I’m in new dorms this year and love it.

Thanks for taking the time to provide me with some info. Always good to hear from current UVA students.

you can live in a residential college. search the forums for old lengthy discussions on how cool brown is, etc.
