Should I use a new email address for my college applications?
I have read at many blogs and forums that it is good to use a new email address solely for the college apps. My concern is that I have already interacted with 2-3 colleges on my primary email and was wondering if changing the email in the applications would negatively impact me. Some also say that the colleges search their database for any interaction with the students and in those cases they wont have my new email address on record.
I would strongly advise having a dedicated email address for college applications. You will be bombarded with email. It’s good to have it all in one place.
Should I do correspondence with the colleges again from the new email address to show demonstrated interest? Since they wont have record of my old email address.
By the time we heard the advice to get a dedicated email address for colleges, the horse was out of the barn. Instead DD will just get a new email account after she graduates. She never used it much anyway, and her high school provides the students with a separate email they use to communicate.
You can notify the colleges that your email has changed if you want. No need to start from the beginning.
You’d also want to get a new email address if your primary address is one that you selected when you were a much younger person, as in this example for fictional student Amanda Jones = ‘mandypandy@xxx.’
Instead, create one that’s more professional, such as, ‘amandaj@xxx’ or ‘ajones@xxx.’
