New Forbes college rankings: some surprises

LOL. Great response monstor344.

Looks like Id be better of going to community college than attending GW in the fall. Look I know it’s probably not elite but it should be in the top 75 or so, not in the 400s. Same goes for all the other schools.

“But in converse, aren’t all college rankings flawed?”

Yes, but some are more flawed than others… eh hem, Forbes.

I am shocked, shocked, blown away and in disbelief over this pathetic excuse for a “list”. This is the most ignorant list I have ever read. Utterly sickning. Really it is.

Oh c’mon it’s not that bad… looks at Dartmouth

well… it’s a jock school? Okay, the list is pretty inaccurate.

BC at 16 is actually one of the things i definitely agree wit…

So I guess. Dartmouth is now the “BC of the North” according to Forbes.

For the most part the list is ridiculous because they rank LACs with Research instiutions. They should never be in the same rankings. So if your school was ranked highly on USNWR, it is going to be trumped to a lower ranking simply because more schools are in it.

“BC at 16 is actually one of the things i definitely agree wit…”

soccersam, can you tell me which of 4 of the schools below (I left Michigan out to avoid the semblance of bias or favoritism) you would remove in favor of BC? Keep in mind that we are discussing academic institutions.

Amherst College
Brown University
California Institute of Technology
Columbia University
Cornell University
Dartmouth College
Duke University
Harvard University
Johns Hopkins University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Northwestern University
Princeton University
Stanford University
Swarthmore College
University of California-Berkeley
University of Chicago
University of Pennsylvania
University of Virginia
Williams College
Yale University

So Far - my favorite part of this totally bogus list is how many posts have been started here that say something like “My school is now rated 16 (no offence to BC), I’m so proud”. I don’t think they could have done a worse job if they had ranked the schools alphabetically.

This mindset is why the USNWR list is so boringly predictable. It heavily weights name recognition.

Just because you haven’t heard of something doesn’t mean it is inferior. And just because something is a household name (“renoWned”) doesn’t make it the best. Personally, I think it’s refreshing to see that not everyone worships the Ivies.

My mom took a look at this list from her Yahoo home page and her first comment was “Look at this Pierre, Clemson is in the 500s and Union College is at #26, you should’ve gone to Union College, I think you made a terrible college choice”

she didn’t understand even after i showed her how North Greenville College was ranked above UT-Austin etc…

The only really surprising thing about Forbe’s rankings is that anyone pays attention to them.

My thoughts exactly. And they did successfully generate popularity by ranking West Point as the top school.

alexandre, I would put BC at or above almost half of those colleges for many reasons. And no, not because it has the most 1600 sat-ers or lowest acceptance rate (we are not ranking colleges as best by how hard they are to get into), but because it produces well-rounded kids with a strong sense of morality in the jesuit tradition that actually know how to handle themselves in the real world. Many of those schools are simply filled with kids that know how to ace multiple choice tests and go into the library their freshmen year, then come out after graduating. Again, this list of colleges isn’t the order acceptance rates like most other lists, it’s defining the word “best” in a different (and better) way if you ask me.

soccersam, I am Catholic and half my family attended Georgetown. No offense, but we Catholics do not hold a monopoly on morality. We should get off our high horse and accept that other denominations and secular institutions are just as capable of taking the moral high ground.

At any rate, I find nothing wrong with BC being ranked among the top 20, but I think other schools make a stronger case.

The top of the list is essentially nothing more than small LAC schools. Proof enough that the list is bogus.

that is fair enough and yes you are correct about the morality part…I cannot deny that some of the rankings on here are ridiculous such as brown, dartmouth, cornell, duke etc but i just feel as if BC has been over-looked in the past when rankings are put out there.

soccersamdude, what are you talking about. BC is ranked 34th in the country and has a fairly well ranked business program. This ranking is crap and everyone knows it. BC isn;t that good to begin with. Its an above average solid school and cannot be mentioned among the elites.

soccersamdude11… Wow - Sorry you feel that way. I don’t think any better or worse of BC for being a institution founded in the Jesuit tradition. But I do find your implication of the ranking of moral superiority offensive.
