Posting this for a friend. She is planning to transfer out of engineering to LSA. I've heard somewhere that your GPA starts over at 0 when you switch schools. Is this true?

I don’t think that’s accurate. If you transfer from another university, your GPA starts from scratch. But transfering from one college to another within the same university should not reset one’s GPA.

GPA’s reset when starting Ross… I came from LSA and I started Ross with a fresh GPA

What about LSA to Engineering? Especially if I plan on getting a dual degree? WOuld I have to seperate GPA’s?

Yeah it resets with Ross. Not sure about CoE but I would assume they do the same thing.

So wait, lets say I enter UMich as a Econ major in LSA and then transfer to CoE at the end of freshman year while getting a BSe in CS and a BS in Econ. How will my GPA be calculated since I will be in both CoE and LSA?

You can’t be part of COE and LSA at the same time.

Thanks bennis, that makes more sense on how GPA is calculated then.

Yes, you can. And no, your GPA is not reset. The only exception to this rule is entering Ross. Even there, it doesn’t always happen - if you are a LSA / Ross double major you keep your incoming GPA once you enter Ross.

Ah, didn’t even think about those that double major. Sorry =P

Tetrahedron is 100% correct.

Besides, one’s cummulative GPA will not change, regardless of how many colleges they attended within the university. A Ross student may have a Ross GPA that imcludes grades from Sophomore through Senior years, but Freshman year will still be added to the cummulative GPA by employeers and graduate school adcoms.

All grades received in one college should transfer over to the other college. So if you have a 3.5 and 32 credits earned at U-M, you should have a 3.5 and 32 credits in LS&A. AP / test credits are a little bit different. I lost 4 credits for Calc BC when moving to CoE, but I got 8 foreign language credits after transferring.
