From the Attorney General’s statement, published by today’s Concord Monitor:
Older allegations of sexual assault or other alleged crimes against students are one thing but to start to look for crimes in typical (even if unfortunate) teenage behavior is going to result in more boys getting in trouble and girls are going to be unduly empowered to cry rape or I did it but I didnt really want to but I couldnt say no… These schools should refer everything to the police and wash their hands of it. This is a tragic witch hunt.
@Center Not Ok. Why on earth would a girl call wolf about rape? The stigma that is attached to being a victim of rape or sexual assault is horrific. Nobody would subject them selfs to that kind of shunning or embarrassment. Boarding schools are small communities. When a girl has a the courage to come forward to admit that she was raped, that girl knows that many people in the school will turn against her for being a “narc” or for getting people in trouble. It takes emended courage to come forward. And many times it is seen that once somebody is accused of rape or a group of people are accused, more people come forward as victims, because they didn’t have the courage to do it alone before. Girls would not “cry rape” for no reason. I have seen first hand how horrible it can be to a girl when she comes out to says she was raped. People turn against them, and call them liars, or tattle tales. I have even seen girls being driven out of their own schools because people were so mean to them after the came forward and reported their assault. What you just said is wrong in so many ways. Yes, more people will get in trouble for doing things that were wrong and that they shouldn’t have been doing. I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. But you CAN NOT say that these allegations will give more girls an opportunity to “cry rape”.
You forget that the New Hampshire Attorney General has access to all the investigators’ notes from every investigation into sexual assault at the school since 2015. This is not about “unfortunate teenage behavior.” This is about the question as to whether the school is safeguarding the welfare of the children in its care. The AG has also served warning that the state had granted itself a fishing license to go after any other crimes committed by the school it may uncover in its investigation.
This is extremely serious.
At one school I know of, it is a violation for a boy to utter the word “ferda”–which simply means “for the boys.”
For example:
Girl student: “Hey, Joe, will I see you around the student center tomorrow?”
Boy student: “Sorry, but Saturday is ferda.”
This can get you brought up on disciplinary charges for being “sexist.”
@cababe97 john doe and jane roe at Exeter comes to mind. A jury found for John Doe and against PEA requiring the school to pay all legal costs among other things. Girl cried rape…it wasnt. Even Owen Labrie wasnt guilty of rape.
