I am thinking about possibly applying to Dartmouth, but I am worried that there isn't going to be much to do in NH except for skiing/hiking/other outdoor activities.

Anybody want to tell me how right/wrong I am? Thanks!

It's deadeningly quiet for hours around. You can always find a few things going on on campus, though. Just don't expect anything to do off campus, besides apple picking, skiing, and other "outdoor" activities (a better word for them, IMHO, is "schlepping"... I'm not sure why they are really considered "outdoorsy" when they usually require driving a long distance from the campus in a car, but that's just me).

Here are some threads that might help :)

posterX, do you even know anything about Dartmouth? It's not "deadeningly quiet" for hours on end, and you don't have to drive anywhere to get to the outdoors, though if you didn't, you'd be wasting the best of what New England has to offer its residents. In any case, the AT runs right through Dartmouth, and there are awesome events like the fifty where you hike 50 miles from Hanover to the top of Mt. Moosilauke. And where did you get the term "schlepping?"

In short, I would say that the outdoors makes New Hampshire one of the greatest states in the union, though that is my opinion. It's hard not to like them when you're at Dartmouth, though.

The outdoors are great - I spend a lot of time up there every year in the fall. All I am saying is that, otherwise, the place is totally dead in my book.

You are right. As far as NH goes, it's all outdoors with a few of the bare necessities scattered here and there. Sure, there are things to do on the Dartmouth campus, but quite a few are centered around the outdoors. If that's what you like, then it'd be perfect. If you're looking for something remotely resembling a metropolis, look elsewhere.

The outdoors opportunities here are AMAZING. Through the DOC, you can go on trips that climb many of New England's highest peaks up in the Whites, easy nature walks, and pretty much everything in between, and all for a few bucks (they provide food/transportation, etc.).

Just as an example, this weekend I'm planning to go on the Mt. Washington canoe portage, which basically involves carrying a canoe to the top of Mt. Washington, and paddling at Lake of the Clouds along the way; then we get to confuse all the tourists who drove up! And the weekend after that, I'm scheduled to do the 50 (from Hanover to Moosilauke)--I just found out I got in--and am both excited and apprehensive about it, but we'll see how that goes!

You got into the 50? Nice. I worked the safety phone last fall, so I'm hoping to do it either this fall or during sophomore summer next year. Hope you enjoy it!

Is the canoe portage also during sophomore summer?

Uh -- what's "the 50"??

The 50 is an (insane) endurance hike, going from Dartmouth along 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail to the top of Mt. Moosilauke (a mountain you'll hear a lot about here!). You get a little over a day to do it, and hike through the night with headlamps and such.

It was definitely an experience, though sadly two of my teammates did not make it to the end. Let's just say I now understand why the DOC gives you only one shot at it...but I'm still so glad I did it!

@Johnny: that's cool--a friend of mine actually worked the phone this time. Best of luck getting in in the future (your chances are best during soph. summer) and maybe I'll see you while volunteering!

And yeah, the portage was last weekend--I did that too :)

Does NH have any theme parks? I saw this travel itinerary for NH and they showed a really cool roller coaster. But now I cant find where this theme park is or its name. Anyone know?

Six Flags New England isn't too far (relative to anything else, that is).

Yea but does really compare to Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. I think not.

canobie lake park
