New Haven communities

For those students and parents familiar with the area, what are good areas to live in around Yale? Meaning safe, somewhat nice, and ideally within walking distance to campus or on an easy bus line.

So far I have been told Westville is good and East Rock is bad. What about downtown, Wooster Square, Fair Haven?

Thanks!

What is your age and family status? If you're a single graduate student, there are plenty of decent apartment buildings very close to campus.

Fair Haven's a little sketchy...I'd probably avoid that if I were you! Wooster Square and downtown are actually pretty nice...I've been around WS quite a lot recently, and it's very developed, urbanized, and vibrant!!

Another New Haven thread...sigh, we get no love. Chances are if you came from a big city yourself--Chicago, NYC, east LA, etc, New Haven's street life will be a walk in the park--yes, even at night.

East Rock is the best area by a wide margin, with Wooster Square or downtown itself being the runner ups. These areas are within an easy walk or bicycle ride of downtown (at any hour) and also have pedestrian and bicycle-friendly streets. They are also well served by shuttle services and buses. Although they are gorgeous neighborhoods as well, Westville and sections of Fair Haven are not within walking distance of downtown, and bicycle and bus routes are not as well developed.
