New Jersey Governors School in Science(NJGSS)2011

@Medulla

You should go to the Simons Summer Research program.
Believe it or not, I think this program helped my sister get into Harvard/MIT if that’s what you’re looking forward to for college. She was also accepted to the Sciences but chose to go to the former due to its more renowned reputation.

@Medulla: I agree with everyone else. I think Simons Summer Research may look better on a college application. The only thing you might have to consider is the price of each program (Simons you have to pay for housing, Governor school you don’t). Putting that aside, I would go for Simons. Congrats on getting into both programs btw.

Does Drew University still offer full scholarships to its GSS attendees? I believe this used to be the case but don’t know if it’s still true in this economy.

I actually came from a college fair today, and I asked the Drew University rep about the scholarship for gov students. He said that they don’t give out full scholarships, but they still offer a partial one.

Drew University offers four years of free tuition to graduates of the New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences. This scholarship applies to graduates from 2008 onward. Visit the Press Release http://www.drew.edu/newspost.aspx?id=47840</a> for details.

The link has expired though.

It says that was last updated on October 2008 and unfortunately it has changed since then.

How many people applied this year?

I actually went to both. As a sophomore, I was made an exception to go to NJGSS, and after Junior year I attended Simons. While Simons had slightly better research, the atmosphere was rather boring and stiff. Gov school, on the other hand, was probably the best 3 weeks of my life.
I would recommend NJGSS over Simons.

I’m rebumping because Gov School is too amazing for this thread to fall into obscurity.

"Forms should be returned to us in US Mail and postmarked by April 12.
We will send you an email when we receive your forms. "

Have you received the email yet?

I got my confirmation email already.

Bump bump bump

Bump!

:]

…guys where is everyone. I’m bored in school and all other sites are blocked.

You guys i am sitting in govschool right now with staryulover

hey guys, i know you guys did this last year; i have a question about applying this year.
how much emphasis do they put on grades? like as in the balance grades vs. extracurriculars?
I do have a B+ in precalc H sophomore year, but everything else is an A or A+ from freshman and sophomore and this year so far. There’s just that one bad grade; do you think a 4th place in New Jersey Science league for bio 1 offsets the bad grade? I worked and volunteered at a doctor’s office, and am president of a club that established a library at a school in rural Kenya, and other less important extracurriculars like science olympiad and honor societies.

How bad is your bio grade? They generally don’t want anything lower than a B. That sets off warning signals; your grades should be A’s with at most a few B’s to be competitive. If your grades are alright, then they place the most emphasis on your essays and EC’s.

oh oops I mean my bio grade is fine, I got an A+ and 4th place in bio league. I have all A’s and A+s on my transcript, except for precalc H which is a B+. xD
what i’m asking is that will that one B+ get me rejected or waitlisted?

thanks for answering :)

@Greenroses - One (or even two) B+ will not hurt your chances. I had one B+ as well, albeit in an elective, and I was accepted. Is it a quarter or final grade? If it’s for a quarter, it definitely will not matter. Good luck!

quick question- do admissions look at overall psat score more or the math score in particular? because i have a perfect math score but i did very bad on the reading and writing…
