New Jersey Governors School in Science(NJGSS)2011

My son was rejected. 225 PSAT 2330 SAT (one sitting) SATIIs 770 Chem 800 Math 2

1 in class at highly ranked HS.

I think they were truly looking for passion for the sciences. Although my S has taken as many possible AP science classes that he could fit into his schedule, his passion is for athletics. I guess they want to see someone more focused in that one area.

To those that were accepted - Enjoy!!

ACCEPTED.

like a boss.

Accepted as well.
Brief Stats:
224 PSAT, 2300 SAT, All APs/Honors (etc.), 4.0 GPA.
Not too many filler ECs, just a few substantial ones that I think I’ve demonstrated significant passion and achievement in.

SO excited. Is there a facebook group yet?

ACCEPTED!

Brief profile:
4.0/4.0 GPA UW 4.65/4.0 W
203 on PSAT, 33 on ACT (not submitted though)
All honors/APs for every year

1 of class

Essays - Decent, really showed my love for science and discovery.
Recommendations - One best in career, the other pretty standard but talked a lot about my summer at Cornell.
Summer - took Pre-Calculus and other courses at Cornell last summer as part of the high school program (Got A’s in all of my courses)

Now the thing that doesn’t make sense with me being accepted is my EC’s…
I’m very big in music/drama. I’ve held lead rolls in all of our musicals/plays, and I am also part of a ton of choirs/bands as well as All South Jersey Chorus. However, I have absolutely no science or math related EC’s, which I was positive would cause me to be denied. Ah well, who’s complaining?!?!

My day has just been made. Congrats to everyone else who got in!!!

IN my haste and happiness I didn’t post any stats. But I look forward to meeting everyone!

@Staryu
I know what you mean. All my ECs are journalism/humanities related but I’ve shown interest in science outside of school ECs. I think they look for demonstrated interest and passion, which you’ve shown.

ACCEPTED!

I’m so excited for this. We should definitely make a facebook group!

Accepted!

I don’t think PSAT/SAT scores counted for much because my scores are well below what everyone has posted.

Someone make a facebook group and post it here ASAP. I fail at making them…

I tried making a facebook group… Apparently you need to invite at least one friend in order to make it.

lol don’t have any friends that applied lol

you can add me!

If we were accepted do we have to go?
There are other programs I’m waiting to hear back from :/

You don’t have to go, but you have to decide by the 12th (postmark date!)

I was accepted as well! I also got into the Simons Summer Research program so I don’t know which one I’m going to end up picking.

Suggestions?

Go to Governor’s school. I heard the academic and social opportunities are everlasting.

Medulla, Simons Summer Research program is much better!

Random-ish question: How many people are accepted into the school? (roughly)

i think its roughly 90 to each.

hmm, but simons is the #2ish research program in the country, right? I feel as if it is a rarer (and consequently better?) opportunity when compared with njgss.

thanks for the responses. whichever one i go with, i think i should be fine.
