I was wondering if anyone had any other information about this new Letters and Science major. I’ve looked at the Data Science Website for UC Berkeley, but they don’t reveal too much information.
It would be most beneficial if anyone knew about a prerequisite GPA needed in order to declare Data Science. For example, CS needs a 3.3 in CS61 A&B and CS70, what would Data Science need and in what courses?

As a data guru myself, I think this is a very attractive option and I’m glad the major is now available just in time for my kid to consider switching over. Hopefully the major won’t have the stigma of attracting primarily those people who couldn’t cut it in CS. As a new major, I doubt if there are any GPA requisites (yet) other than University and school requisites.
With the advent of IOT-enabled devices, analytics and data mining needs in so many fields, cybersecurity and monster data-generating sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the job market for data people will become bigger and bigger in the future.
Interesting, I’m going in as a CS major. But I’ll certainly take some Data science courses and see which one I like more. If I like Data science more, I’ll declare that. If I like CS but can’t declare, I’ll end up doing Data Science. Hopefully a prerequisite GPA isn’t instituted.
Everything you need to know about this program is available on the site including the courses required to declare a Major and the pre reqs. You just have to spend 1/2 hr to navigate around the site and read. Your time would be well spent there than here, also have you considered calling the university to request more information.

Since the major is new, they may not yet know if it is popular enough to require capacity-based limitation (i.e. a GPA threshold higher than 2.0).
It is possible that some of those who choose this major would otherwise choose CS or statistics, possibly reducing demand for those majors.

I am a newly admitted transfer student also strongly interested in DS major. I have checked the declare required courses, and for the class Data 8, may I use Stat 8 to cover it?
Data 8, CS 8 and Stat 8 are all the same class
