Hello Everyone, I am sorry for bothering anyone by posting this. I just wanted to get help much as I do not know what to do anymore. I am currently a junior in college, I attend a small private liberal college. My major is B.A history at the moment. Honestly I hate it so much I am not doing well in it either, plus English is my second language as well. I just can’t do it anymore. I want to do it anymore. I am just stressed all the time, I am struggling a lot… I am sorry it sounds like I am making my self sound pity. I thought about Criminal Justice, long story short I don’t think this major would be good back in my country because every country has different laws, or I was thinking maybe this could be hard for my English as well. But I only spoke to one person about it and the person told me it was easier than History for sure. I been doing research on it a lot. Like I said Criminal Justice but, English could be hard and plus different laws in each country. I looked into International studies, and international businesses. I do speak two languages(Turkish, English) maybe this could maybe a bit of advantage for me, but a lot of people does get a business major I know that. maybe I could do International studies for my major and do minor in international business or just business? I am not sure so far. I just need opinions please, If you took your time to read this thank you so much.
Have your considered sociology?
I think international/global studies would be a really cool and interesting major
What are you wanting to do for a career? any ideas?
I actually never looked into Sociology at all @cheddarcheesem. I will look into it right now… I am much knowledge about international/global studies at all. would you mind to explain it to me at all @collegebound1516
Well it could get you into a lot of different careers, something in government/politics/security probably. If you got passionate about it the major could eventually lead to CIA/FBI stuff if you wanted haha but thats just an example. My sister in law majored in international relations and she works to calm tensions with the U.S. and terrorist groups in Africa. Your knowledge of two languages could be useful but just a thought haha
I would slow down. Are you planning on going back to Turkey to find a job or do you want to say in the US? If you are interested in business than what you need to do is get some business experience. Whether you major in sociology, history or english really doesn’t matter.
Clearly your written English has problems, so,I wouldn’t count on the biligual advantage except outside the US. I would suggest you go to your career center, think about what jobs you might like and then what skills you need to get those jobs. If you want to return to your home country, I’d start networking over there now.
You need to meet with your major advisor, and someone in the counseling center, and find out what majors you could change to at this point and still graduate on time. You might not have very many options.
It is good that you are considering what would be marketable in your home country. It is not likely at all that you will be able to find a permanent job in the US after your OPT expires because of the limited number of H1B visas that are issued every year. You need to plan ahead.
I moved your post to the College Majors forum, OP.
If you are a junior in your second semester, if you change your major it will very likely extend your time to degree. Even a sociology major has some sequenced requirements that will take you longer than two semesters to complete. Are you able to/can you afford to stay in college for another year?
I agree with the suggestion of sociology, since criminal justice is essentially an applied version of sociology (and international studies is related to sociology, too). International studies is another good choice since you know English and could do international work when you return home to Turkey.
I agree with the above, though - what do you want to do? What kind of work would you like? If you know, then you can select a major based upon that. If you don’t know, then just pick something that really interests you. Any major is going to involve a struggle with English, particularly any social science or humanities major because they all involve lots of reading and writing. So are you hating history because you don’t like history classes, or do you hate history because it involves a lot of English and you struggle with the language (a problem that won’t be solved by changing majors)? Have you visited the writing center?
Disagree. Turkish is a critical language - we’re paying to send Americans with zero background in Turkish abroad to learn the language, and governmental agencies are actively recruiting people who can speak Turkish. Plus the OP’s written English is fine - perhaps some grammar errors, but those can be corrected over time and honestly, I see native English speakers making the same mistakes.
