New Member: Chances at Emory, Duke, Harvard, UVA

Please, please somebody tell me my chances for Emory, Duke, Harvard, or UVA:

I'm a junior from Louisiana.

Old SAT: 800v, 710m
PSAT: 239 (79v, 80m, 80w)
GPA: 4.22w, 4.00uw
Class Rank: 1/84
Recommendations: my teachers love me :)

Highlights of Awards:

I'm on a two time state championship swim team, and I'm captain for 2005 season.
My quiz bowl team is one of the best in the state. We won Jr. Beta State in 2003. Last year, we were third in the LAQT Division. This year, we're seeded 1st in district.
I won Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in 2003 for sci-fi/Fantasy.
I won Louisiana Writes! (state writing contest) for nonfiction, poetry, and I came in second for fiction.
I won district and state for the George M. and Stella S. Knight contest, history essay. National is pending.
I've been Outstanding Student for two years running.
Of 19 possible courses, I've been superior student for 13.
I was president of my class for two years.
I am active in behind the stage theater stuff.
I was a museum docent and then worker.
I'm in National Honor Society.
I'm on the executive board of the school's writing club.
I have been in Hi-Y (went to Model UN) and French club.
I'm an IB Diploma Candidate.
I've written three books.

please? anybody? My school can't help me with this. We're state-university affiliated and EVERYONE (or maybe 80% of college-goers) go to LSU.

I'd say you're a shoe-in just about Emory & UVA.

You have a great chance at Duke but there is definitely a chance they will turn you down.

Harvard...you have a chance, which is all anyone has.

Hope that helps. What do you want to major in? A potential valedictorian like you w/ a just about perfect SAT has a lot of options.

Bad senior year:
Emory-match
Duke-reach
Harvard-reach
U Virginia-reach

Good senior year:
Emory-safety
Duke-match
Harvard-reach
U Virginia-safety

***. it seems to me everyone is being harsh.. i personally think you have a great shot at Harvard. (no joke). 2390 SAT (assuming), and valedictorian, etc.. STATE CHAMP.. that stuff gets you in. we'll see. i think you will get in harvard.

dude you might need to lower your expectations, if I were you I'd look at some regional state universities or something. Forget about Duke, LSU is a reach for you--i heard they've been turning down plenty of kids with 4.0's AND perfect SAT's (and you don't even have a perfect score, so you're screwed, man)

Thanks maverick64, haha.

Seriously, though, thanks for the REAL help, though. You guys rock. I want to double major in history/econ.

What kind of books have you written? If they were published and are at least somewhat visible, I've heard that it gives you a huge boost for schools like Harvard.

nope, not published yet, unfortunately, I'm no Christopher Paolini. It's all fantasy, at any rate.

Definitely give it a shot at the publishing. The only thing that can be hurt is, I suppose, your pride, but if you do get it published it will be such a major plus for admissions. besides, as a writer, don't you want it published anyway? (forget admissions) =)

Oh man, to be published is a dream beyond all Ivies. Anyone know of any publishers/agents who are actually willing to read fiction by teens?

there is no such thing as a "great shot at harvard" without special conditions. go check out the results thread in the harvard forum if you don't believe me. you have the same lottery ticket that many do and anyone telling you otherwise doesn't know much about the current college admissions scene.

Question: WHEN DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SLEEP????

I think you are set for Emory, Duke, and UVA....hopefully you are in-state for UVA because that'll help, but even if you aren't I bet you will still get in. My suggestion would be, if you really want to, to apply Early Action to Harvard. If you get deferred or denied, send out apps. in December.
Word of caution about Emory-they are freakish about showing interest. No interest, no campus visit = no admission or wait list.

oops never mind, I reread your post and found that you are from Louisiana. But you'll get in.
*Are you going to be recruited for swim? That would certainly help.

Your stats are awesome, but why don't you have SAT II and AP scores? I understand if you don't take the APs, but since you're a junior, you should have already taken (or take VERY soon) the SAT IIs....

Like I said, my guidance counselor knows NOTHING. I asked her, "When do I take SAT IIs." She replies, "Fall of senior year." Now, I'm finding out I should probably take them. I guess in June. I hate my school's admin.

Anyway, my school offers one AP (calculus, taking next year), but I'm in full IB. I won't get most of those scores until the month before college starts. (Does that hurt IB candidates?)

I'm probably not going for athletics. As was mentioned, I don't sleep that much...

Justice~, you were a deferred Harvard EA applicant, weren't you? What happened? Did you get in?

Yes, take the SAT IIs in June and just get it out of the way!!! College applications are so stressful, and try and get as much testing as you can out of the way before you apply.

Yeah, I agree. And you should take the SAT IIs while you still remember what you learned. It's surprising how much you'll forget when it's been a while since you took the course.

An award winning writer with a 1510 SAT and from LOUISIANA--You have a great shot at any school you choose including Harvard. (of course have some back-ups just in case) Colleges love geographic diversity-(trust me I know-I'm from Long Island). What you HAVE TO DO!! You must take SAT's again. If you have not taken the SAT II- Writing, most colleges will not accept the old SAT's and they are not giving the SAT II Writing as it is now incorporated into the New SAT. My d is a Junior too (I know what I'm talking about). You can't take the SAT I and II on the same day so you may need to take these tests in May and June (you cAN ALSO TAKE IN fall but SAT II's may be better to take at end of school year. Also don't overlook ACT's. You can take this in June too -it's being given a week after the SAT's. Also I do not know what your financial situation is -but except for Emory, these schools are not too generous with merit aid. Tuition at UVA is also quite high for OOS. So if money is a factor, you may want to look at high quality schools with generous financial aid- Washington U.--Tulane and I think Rice. Good luck.
