NEW MEMBER; Chances at Tufts???

All right, my guidance counselor basically only told me to send out my applications when it comes to applications...so...um, I have no idea what my chances are. I'm applying EDII, and I REALLY want to get into Tufts, obviously...however, I didn't visit because my great-grandmother died the day before we were going to leave for Boston to visit, and I haven't had a chance since then. Input, please! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GPA: 91.7 / Class rank: 37/406 (Top 10%)
^ I did pretty shoddy Freshman year, with all B grades. Sophomore mostly 92s, but Junior my GPA was 96 and first quarter as a senior 98. I'm in ALL IB classes since I'm going for the IB diploma, and do VERY well in them (better than any honors classes I've taken!).

SAT1: 790cr, 610m, 740w
SAT2: 750 Lit, 700 US History, 550 Spanish (um, will this hurt me? My grades in IB Spanish V are actually quite good, and they were even better in IB Spanish IV last year - and I don't plan on doing anything with Spanish, besides)
ACT: 35 English, 36 Writing, 27 Math, 29 Science = 32 Composite
AP: European History - 4/5
IB: Math Studies - 7/7 (I'm taking the rest of my tests this year)

Spanish 1 at SUNY Albany: A-

I have a pretty good number of awards etc. in my activities as well. Lastly, I have pretty amazing recommendations (2, one from my IB Coordinator/Theory of Knowledge teacher, and one from my Mock Trial Coach/IB Americas teacher), and my essays/short answers are pretty good.

Chances? Thanks!!!!!!! I already made a post along these lines, but with less details, etc. And nobody replied! PLEASE give me some input, thank you!

I think you have a fair chance. ED should help.

You have a pretty decent chance, you look like a solid, determined candidate with budding passion just from reading your resume, despite a moderate math score, everything pretty much makes up for that. You're fine!

Bur my one question is, are you sure you want to do early decision without even have visted Tufts yet? I mean I love Tufts too, but the pictures did not tell the whole story of the school, I got a totally different impression of the school when I visited, one that I liked, but one much different from what the website/viewbooks conveyed. Jus make sure you know that you love Tufts enough to make the commitment to go there and only there.

I actually never received a viewbook, so for better or for worse I don't even have any built in assumptions about the campus itself. I decided on early decision primarily based on extensive research throughout their website (everything from lists of their Student Organizations to their policies on what can be brought into a dorm room, and the exact dimensions of the dorm rooms that I am likely to receive) in addition to glowing word of mouth from several sources, and the people I knew who chose early decision.

That was the primary concern of my guidance counselor, that I hadn't been there, and I admit it's a big thing. However, where the other schools had specific location-based things that I didn't like about them, I know that Tufts is close to Boston, it has at least a good general quality of life, and it's phenomenal academically. Worst case scenario (which I doubt I'll have to deal with) I transfer. I usually can succeed in any situation, as long as I have an academic challenge, which I'm sure I will at Tufts.

Though I am visiting it at the end of winter break for its students! Too late, but I do understand where you are coming from about that. Anyway, thank you for that!

Bump, since I'd like more input if possible...

you have a chance

definatly a chance... but the math SAT score is kinda low...

Bump, plz?

i think shes in, then again, im local :)

I've never totally understood the geographical distribution thing; I'm from a virtually unknown school in rural New York, that very luckily has the IB program. Does the fact that nobody else is applying from my school help me or hurt me? I'm curious if anyone knows.

Mmmmm, bump?

well tufts is strange

getting out of state is alot easier i would think, i live 2 towns away, and they take like 3 out of the 30 kids that apply

now multiply that by the tons of scools in my area

but schools i think it depends on the relationship...last year 46 applied and 14 accepted 8 attending but in that 46 there were about 7 that withdrew apps

Wow, definitely different than my HS. Nobody's heard of Tufts except for the top 10%, and our guidance counselors basically encourage us not to apply. Of course, they encourage us not to do IB or AP as well, so maybe they don't know what they're talking about a good percentage of the time. :)
